E-coli in baby wee

My LO was poorly and holding her head which the doctors found really strange, she was sent to the hospital and luckily got better overnight after being ill for two weeks. They sent off a urine sample and it has come back that it had e-coli so we have to repeat. Why might this have happened? I’m really concerned.. her bottles are scrubbed and sterilised, the only thing I can think is we use a perfect prep machine - but I follow all the instructions and clean it regularly/check the pipes inside the machine. I’m really concerned :(

It just means she had a UTI- nothing to do with stilerilising bottles or not.

Some babies and children are more prone to them, it's just one of those things.

E. coli is the most common cause of a UTI and is caused by bacteria from the bowel entering the urinary tract.

Make sure you're keeping her clean and wiping from front to back and hopefully it won't happen again Smile

And I'm not implying that you're not already keeping her clean, sorry if it may have sounded that way!

Haha no it’s fine , I know we certainly do (and I made sure DH knew to do it as well - not having those bits and all lol)

They said it’s possibly caused by her poo always being so runny from the type of milk she’s on (it goes everywhere even when changed immediately)

Yes that does sound like it could be quite likely.

Was there any discussion about anything that could be done re changing milk or bulking out her poo?

sthitch · 03/01/2018 15:14

They haven’t mentioned anything yet but just sent off another sample- (fun hour & half holding her over a pot) if nothing comes back then all is good, but if there’s something then they will treat her. She’s seems totally fine now so can things like this go away on their own? Poo-wise, we will start weaning in two months so I’d hate to change her milk because this one suits her (apart from green runniness, which is common with SMA comfort, but if they say to change then i will.) I’m surprised it took so long to hear back as she was tested two weeks ago almost.

It doesn't sound like they're too concerned then, that's reassuring.

It can take that long as the sample has to be incubated and then they have to wait for the bacteria to multiply before it can be tested.

Yes, it can go away on its own. It would be the same as if you got cystitis- that's a bacterial UTI the same as what your DD has had. Most of the time in healthy people, it can go away on its own without treatment. But if it persists antibiotics will be given.

Fingers crossed this test comes back clear!
