Making up formula reassurance pls

Hi I'm currently staying with relatives been here since yesterday. DD is almost 8 months so still on formula. When I arrived yesterday I went to prepare her bottle and realised the kettle is filthy (loads of black bits come out when you pour the water). Tried to give it a clean but had no luck so have since been filling up her bottles with tap water and then sticking them in the microwave until they're what I would consider hot enough to kill formula bacteria then adding the powder and rapid cooling. In a rural location no shops within walking distance or public transport and I don't drive so can't pick up ready made! Thought I was going for a safer method than using the kettle but am now starting to doubt myself. I will be here until Wednesday afternoon so really hope it's safe to continue doing this!! Please reassure me and tell me I'm worrying over nothing hopefully

Can you boil water in a saucepan ?

Boringnamechange1 · 01/01/2018 22:30

I thought about it but quite honestly I wasn't too keen on the look of the saucepans either Blush. I might try and scrub one up tomorrow while I have the place to myself. Saves any awkward discussions as to why I'm scrubbing pots rather than using the kettle.

Do you think it's limescale or mound in the kettle? Might be worth hossing some vinegar in either way if you have some handy.

But in the meantime boil a pan of water.

The bits in the kettle won’t kill her but there are sone pretty nasty bacteria present in formula occasionally that could. I’d use the kettle or buy a new one tomorrow and keep it in your room.

I think it's limescale but it's a lot of build up and I'd rather just not use it at all. I think I will scrub a pot and boil the water for her bottles tomorrow.

Everyone Oh God that's really worried me now I really did think that I'd be able to.get the water to a high enough temperature in the microwave. I worry about her a lot Sad. Absolutely no way of getting access to another kettle.

You won't have hurt her or anything, she'll be fine.

If I were in your position I'd make up bottles using boiled water from the saucepan. As that could be inconvenient I might make up the bottles in advance and store them in the back of the fridge if I found it was a problem (I don't usually do that but it's safe enough if you do it properly).

I completely understand your worry, I was the same. It's so much easier now that DS is weaned.

Thanks Fartniss I've managed to scrub up a saucepan so am going to make them up in advance. I sometimes advance make them at home so am not worried about this just glad I've found a solution. Should have probably done this from the start but felt a bit awkward having to go around the kitchen looking for a decent pot and a clean sponge. No one home today so will be able to get them made up and be glad to get home tomorrow. I can't wait until she's fully weaned I'll be glad to see the back of sterilisers and formula!
