One year old having tantrums

Does anyone else have a one year old who throws an absolute wobbler if they don't get their way? DS2 is an absolute delight when everything is going his way - more smiley than any baby I've know, very loving, adventurous and cheeky. However, as soon as something happens he doesn't like - usually his brother not sharing toys, naptime, or me leaving the room - he goes absolutely bonkers. He scream, throws himself on the floor, and sometimes even bites. He's only just turned one and has been doing it for a few weeks already. I can't imagine what it'll be like when he's a two year old! Any others in the same boat who can offer advice?

I had a toddler who had tantrums well before he was 2 (although not as young as your DS). He stopped when he was around 26 months, and was a relatively easy 3yo. Hopefully you’ll find the same, OP!

No advice really but my DS is also very 'changeable' Shock He's not yet 10 months but certainly makes his feelings known when not happy.

@Capelin I do secretly hope it means we're getting it out of the way early! I've just read that doing baby signing can help as it'll give them a way to express themselves... unfortunately I'm back to work next week so will have to teach us myself rather than attend a class.

@KatnissMellark I like 'changeable'. I call mine a diva Grin

Haha, I'm sure it's similar to people saying their DC are 'spirited' but at 9.5 months I'm not sure he's really naughty yet??! Grin Same as yours though, super happy, smiling, laughing more than any other baby I've met when he's happy, but crazy livid when not!

My 14mo DS sounds exactly the same! Bit of a shock as DS1 was lovely all the time at this age polishes rose tinted glasses but he was a horrendous 3 year old. I'm hoping we're just getting the diva behaviour out the way early this time Confused

God yes.
My nearly 23 month old has been having huge tantrums since around 13 months

@Drogonssmile Exactly the same here. DS1 was so chilled all the time. He wasn't a great sleeper until he was about 18 months but looking back, I had no idea how good I had it then! He did 'turn' at about 2.5 though and we're just coming out the other side (I think!) a year later.

We have a lot of little ones in the extended family. I only know one who didn't do that as a toddler, though obviously how much varies.

'Advice' (ha, I feel very unqualified):

  • Brace yourself. I doubt you are getting it out of the way early.
  • Routine helps.
  • We do: praise and reward for good behaviour; lots of emphasising the right way to behave (even when it seems they don't understand); some kind of immediate consequence for major issues (e.g. putting down and ignoring when v. young). It works, but it's tiring.

Yep OP exactly the same, DS1 is now 4 and mostly a lot better although he's going through a stage of knowing everything at the moment Hmm
