How many toys do you have out at a time?

We have so many post Christmas and his second birthday in January... all my son every wants to play with are cars and trains (and read books) but we still have everything out in the living room and a separate playroom (lots of hand me downs for older cousins) What do you do? I’m going to try a ‘toy rotation’ this new year.

Thanks.

2 and 4 year old

I have a one in, one away policy

Only because if toys are left out, the dog will chew them Angry

I try to only have a few out in the living room. The rest are in the cellar and I rotate them every week or so. Or DD1 (2.5) goes down and chooses something and then I put something else away.

If DS always plays with the same things, I would put, say, the trains away and leave him with the cars and something else and then swap them over. Maybe then he'll play with the new stuff.

Have you already bought birthday presents? If not, I would put away some of the Xmas presents he hasn't played with until his birthday.

DD2 had her birthday in December and we've ended up with far too much new stuff, it drives me crazy!

We habe about 80% accessible in the playroom but try to limit 3/4 actually out being played with as they get too muddled. After christmas holidays in an going to try setting up 2 activities an afternoon to try and encourage some variety e.g. craft, small world play, baking, reading and colouring etc

Mine are 2 and 4, and they have a playroom. We have a huge kallax unit and I put the things I don’t want them playing with unsupervised in the high up boxes (play sets with really tiny bits, craft stuff, DD1’s big Lego sets, play doh etc). Things like happyland, duplo, dolls etc are at the bottom and accessible. They tend to play mainly with the toy kitchen, ice cream parlour etc which are obviously ‘out’.

Thanks everyone. I’m definitely going to start making more of an effort to have specific things out and a few at a time

All of the toys in the whole wide world...or maybe it just feels that way

At that age I would have roughly 3 out and change the selection when they napped (and I remembered).

I was wondering what to do with all ours too - baby due in 5 days and dd1 turning 2 next month, toys everywhere and I need storage!!!

I once saw a meme that said.....

Want to know what it's like living with kids?
Put everything single thing you own in a pile on the floor.
Put it all away
Repeat

That pretty much sums up our house!!

Whatever she chooses. They are kept in three chests in the living room and she tends to empty one and enjoy that for the day...
I hadn’t even considered limiting her toys but maybe that’s why my house looks like a nursery 😂
