Blanket over babies head

A few games of peepo with my 15w old DD and she has now decided she likes blankets over her head, it doesn’t matter where we are, if there’s a blanket or a piece of her clothing around it goes straight over her head! I’m always with her so that’s not a problem, however I’m a bit worried at night- she has a sleeping bag but on colder nights like tonight I’ll put a blanket on her. My brother would only sleep with a blanket over his head so my mum had to buy ‘safety blankets’? I have some crocheted blankets with large holes, will this do? Problem is she even folds them over some how so they are doubled up, she’s never right Grin

I would put her in another layer under her sleeping bag rather than put a blanket on top

Good idea - like a knitted cardigan? What about bottoms?

How cold is the room?

Not freezing (the heating goes on!) but it’s not on all night as our bed is now touching the radiator with the cot being in the room- also we have an extremely old boiler without a timer so it doesn’t come on unless it’s put on - that’s why I like her to have a blanket in case she doesn’t wake up until like 6am and it’s not quite warm enough and we don’t wake up.

The current SIDS guidelines recommended that a room should be between 16-20 degrees Celsius. I'd be surprised if your bedroom was below that, we sleep with the window open (even now Blush my DP is a hot sleeper!) and our room is usually about 18degrees at night and we put DS 2 months in a vest, sleepsuit and sleeping bag so I can't imagine that your DD is cold enough to really need the blanket too. However I think the cellular blankets are supposed to be the safest ones.

I would go with either a full babygro under her sleeping bag - so sleeves and legs with fee covered maybe with a long-sleeve vest underneath so her arms are warm enough.

What tog is the sleeping bag? Can you go up a "tog" so it's a heavier one?

I used to swaddle DD when she was very small because she hated her gro-bag at first. Will she go for swaddling or does she like the arm-waving at night?

sthitch · 28/12/2017 06:29

She’s definitely an arm waver so swaddling is no good. I can’t think what Tog it is but it’s not a thin one. I shall get a room thermometer, but basically when I woke up with her at 530am this morning, it felt quite cold out of the covers (I put the heating on obviously) so I’m thinking maybe the hours before may have been a bit cold. I’ll now stick with the sleeping bag + pjs/sleepsuit and a (not to thick) cardigan.

We’re getting the boiler replaced soon thankfully!

Get a room thermometer and have a look at Jojo Maman Bebe sleeping bags - they do extra thick ones with sleeves. Especially if she’s
Prone to covering her face I really would try to stick to the safe sleeping guidelines and not have loose bedding in the cot.

Argos do some hospital style blankets. Not very attractive to look at but if she puts them over her head she will still be able to breathe

Ceebs85 · 28/12/2017 06:53

Get a gro-egg and just put her in a sleep suit. Safer to be a bit chilly than too hot anyway x

llangennith · 28/12/2017 07:19

Get a cellular blanket from Mothercare or other baby shop.

eggofmantumbi · 28/12/2017 10:47

You can also get sleeping bags with arms which keep things more snugly!

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 28/12/2017 19:21

My DS room was cold. We bought an extra warm sleeping bag at 3.5 togs. If you think she’ll be too cold tonight, could you put a tshirt on under her babygro?

1sttimeunicorn · 28/12/2017 19:34

Agree with the others, suggest another layer under the pjs rather than over the top of the bag.
I think generally babies can sleep well in cooler rooms 16-20 is the recommended temperature. The grow bag sleeping bags are great and come with a handy thermometer to help you know what she should wear. My son has just gone to sleep in a baby grow and a 2.5 tog bag, his room will be around 18 tonight.
