My cloth nappy bubble may be about to burst!

My ds2 is not reacting very well to the cloth nappies I bought. His skin has started to crack and go a bit scabby. My mum said that i was exactly the same when i was a baby and she had to leave me out of nappies frequently because my skin was so cracked and bleeding! I had severe eczema but I didnt think mine would have it.
Anyway, I think I am going to have to sell them, and I have only used them a handful of times!! I am also waiting for some to arrive still!
Anyone else had problems?

Right... where exactly is he sore?

powder28 · 24/04/2007 11:18

where the edge of the nappy and the wrap meet the top of his leg. He wouldnt leave it alone when he had the cloth ones on. It must have felt so itchy.

Oooooh - yes, that sounds much more like a wrap reaction than a build up or anything else.

Leave him in disps until it heals, then use just the fleece. It is much more likely to be a reaction to the motherease bindings than the fleece (we can only use ME very occasionally with DS) - see how it goes from there.

Wrap issues are sooo much more easily fixed

So should i avoid using the plasticky wraps? I also think maybe the bumhugger was not very kind to his skin.

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 24/04/2007 11:39

Its not always all plasticky wraps, but it would probably be a good idea to introduce them one at a time to work out which it is causing it (obv you only use them one at a time anyway ...).

If the bumhugger is small then it won't help. I hate my bumhugger with a passion though so I am probably biased!!

powder28 · 24/04/2007 11:58

I also don't like the bumhugger, don't know why.

You can't see where the poppers are to do it up, it smells of cereal when its wet (my only nappy with hemp in so that could just be a hemp quality), and its just a slightly odd shape

powder28 · 24/04/2007 12:15

Mines got velcro but its too small anyway, would probably be better on a very young baby.

It could be the wraps I agree.
Mother-ease wraps are quite well-known to cause a reaction where the binding touches the skin.
I found the best fabrics for sensitive skins were hemp or bamboo, as both have anti-bacterial properties.
What does your mum mean she doesn't think they suit him!!!???
He looks divine!

powder28 · 24/04/2007 16:08

Lol maisiemog. i have just listed my swaddlebees nappy on ebay.

I don't like bumhuggers either. I think they look OK, but they always leaked on my little boy because they were very slim cut in the crotch.
And of course they smelt of breakfast cereal.

nappyzone · 26/04/2007 13:31

why r u selling your swaddlebees? i ask as i have some in stock popper pocket with velour lining and it/ they looks lush - how reliable do people find them as thinking of snaffling one for my ds as they look lovely.

claireybee · 26/04/2007 14:35

I find my dd can sometimes get a little bit sore if she is in the same type of nappy/wrap through too many changes. So what i try to do is use a different style nappy at every change through the day and change wrap at least once-this seems to stop and friction marks from the binding

powder28 · 26/04/2007 17:52

Nappyzone, you struck a chord with me. I have taken my listing off and I am going to keep all my nappies. If I have another baby I can use them then.
I can't bear to part with my lovely nappies!

great! glad to be of service! sorry only just read all the thread now and realise your woes - that was monday have things improved? I genrally have my ds in pockets with fleece linings and have no trouble but today had in a bamboo shaped twice and he looks a bit red round his bits - he had a me wrap on airflow thingy and its left red marks in his creases . Has anyone used those organic velour lined swaddlebee pockets then? as say only used fleece ones but interested to know if its worth hogging one for my stash?

MissGolightly · 26/04/2007 19:23

Sorry, haven't had time to read the whole thread but have you tried changing your washing powder? And you can use a LOT less than they say on the box, just a tiny scoop. And don't overfill the machine or it can stop the rinse cycle from being effective.

Worth trying before you sell the nappies!

powder28 · 26/04/2007 21:21

I probably wouldnt be so worried about it if I hadnt had such severe eczema as a baby but my mum actually got quite upset when she saw dhs skin as she said it was starting to look how mine looked. My sister was completely fine in cloth nappies. I will keep them because they are so pretty.

Funny, my ds3 only gets a rash in disposables! never in cloth, and ds1 and ds2 frequently got rashes and they were always in disposables. Metanium cream is supposed to be good for rashes but I've never needed to use it myself.

maxbear · 27/04/2007 20:37

my dd had horrible red raw skin with her washable nappies and i was desperate to use them, metanium cream cured it where vasaline and others had failed, then I just used a barrier cream each time. She also seemed to be allergic to some of the flushable liners so for ages I used fleece liners. She is now 2 years old and still prone to nappy rash at times but for her it does not make any difference in a disposible. Have just had ds 7 weeks ago and not a red bum in sight...yet. Although am using disposibles at night as he wees such a lot.
