3 day old DD won't settle in crib. Help!

My newborn DD doesn’t settle in her Moses basket. After a feed she will only settle on me or my DHs chest. If I put her in the basket she screams and the only way I can settle her is by offering a boob.

I’m worried about SIDS and if we fall asleep with her on us and then roll over and squash her.

Please help - how do I teach her to love her bed??

My DD was the same, aside from the space within the Moses, she hated the stand it was on and any slight movement she would scream. We ended up taking the Moses basket off it’s stand and putting it directly on the floor and that seemed to work.
The chest sleeping is a bad habit to get into, my LO will now only take naps if lying on someone.!
Best of luck

I had a cot with the side down wedged up to the bed. I'd feed baby lying down, cuddle around her till she fell asleep then would roll over back to the bed. Tbh with a baby that young me and dp did whatever we could just to get her to sleep, even taking shifts holding her if need be and would have her in the sling in day time. The sleep deprivation is really hard (especially those first 12 weeks!) but it will pass and will get easier!

My dd was the same tried to get her to like her Moses basket but in the end she went in her cot (in our room) at about 10days old. Much happier but she did like to sleep with her arms straight out so I wonder if she just wanted more room!

Our DS was the same (now 11 weeks) and we bought a sleepyhead at week 4 and has been the best thing we have purchased, that and his myhummy we were given and he stays settled until his feed!

tiredmumsclub88 · 26/12/2017 08:00

I had this with my LO (now 3 months) we decided he didn't like the smell of the Moses basket or the fact that he couldn't see us - we went and bought a next to me and he sleeps in that no problem- expensive but well worth it for my sanity!!

Also, have you tied a Ewan the sheep or an Ollie the owl? The heart beat and womb sounds help bang feel at home, as they really shouldn't be out yet. Good luck 👍☺️ xx

Have you tried a sleepy head? We initially had our baby in a Moses basket and he would settle but not stay settled for long. We put him in the sleepy head because a friend let us borrow theirs and it has transformed him!!!

Don't heat a cot with a hot water bottle.
Co sleep safely
Newborn babies are not supposed to sleep for long periods

PinkAvocado · 27/12/2017 13:47

Newborns are not meant to sleep for long and it is exhausting. I too think researching safe co-sleeping is best. 4 days ago your baby was warm and as close to you as possible so it’s a shock to be separated.

RemainOptimistic · 27/12/2017 13:58

-swaddle
-pre heat cot with hot water bottle
-stick used breastfeeding pads in cot (safely, away from baby)
-mum wears a big t shirt, tuck it onto cot mattress
-white noise on YouTube (we used an old phone, tried a few different ones until we found one DS found calming - others made him cry)

  • newborn baby should be fed every 3 hours so should not be sleeping for much longer than that in one go

Please don't put baby on top of the duvet, the surface is too soft so baby's face could end up suffocated. A firm sleeping surface with no loose fabric is needed for safety.

Safe co sleeping - remove DH from the bed. Remove excess pillows and blankets. Tuck the duvet around you up to your armpit (wear a long sleeved top). Sleep in a "C" shape, one arm out, on your side, around baby. With your arm out you can't roll so baby is safe. Baby must have its own swaddle or sleeping bag, don't put baby under duvet.

This is completely normal but exhausting.

Look up the ISIS guide to safe cosleeping.

danigrace · 27/12/2017 19:56

Another co-sleeper here for the same reasons. I was really worried about doing it too but the midwife that came to our house for postnatal check said - as a mother who has done my own research I can assure you that as long as you are exclusively breastfeeding and have none of the risk factors then sleeping with you is actually the safest place for your baby, but as a midwife I have to tell you a firm surface on their back like a moses basket is best... That reassured me and baba was on my chest until almost 3 months when he was big enough to go on his side next to me with my arm around him. I've never had to properly wake to feed as he kind of helps himself. All feels very natural.

Ds1 was like this. He had silent reflux. But he also liked to comfort suck. We got very little sleep for first 15months. Ds2 was the same, I gave him a dummy after day 1. Slept anywhere after until I woke him for a feed. Ditched the dummy at 10mo.
Also rolled up a towel and tucked it under his sheet to make a more snug nest. Warm sheets with hot water bottle. Raised head of bed slightly for the reflux.

MollyCule · 27/12/2017 20:13

DD wouldn't sleep in the moses basket either. We panic bought a sleepyhead and chicco next-to-me on day 5 or 6, that night we got a 4 hour stretch. Good luck!

CheesecakeAddict · 27/12/2017 20:27

I second the sleepy head. It's the best purchase I made. She can fall asleep in the bed with me and when she's out I can move her into her crib.

StripySocks1 · 27/12/2017 22:50

I used a next2me crib with the side down and she could come right up to the edge of my bed so she could see and hear me, she used to watch me fall asleep and then fall asleep herself, I couldn’t recommend it enough Grin

Mcgieml3 · 27/12/2017 22:52

I let mine sleep in his chair at night when tiny if he couldn’t settle ... it’s a snug fit and I could rock him to sleepy. Babies don’t feel secure flat out in a big basket and many (most) struggle with wind in the first few months. Being a bit more vertical helps. Obviously it’s not something to do forever but you just need to get through those first few weeks!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help Smile We’ve had a complete turn around and now she’s a dream baby. At night she feeds every 3 1/2-4 hours and every 2-3hrs in the day so I’ve been getting big chunks of sleep.

We got a sleepyhead so she’s sleeping in that on our bed while DH relegated to the spare room but getting her used to the Moses basket in the day with success so far so will try her again in the Moses basket at night in a couple of days.
