Overs excited 5yr old making herself ill - any tips

DD (almost 6) has a tendency to get very very excited about birthdays / Xmas / big events and holidays and we are really feeling it this week.

She seems to be in a constant state of anxiety and it is making her ill (and us!) this morning she thought she was going to vomit twice mainly because she’d been jumping around like a lunatic for an hour. The last two years she has been ill on Xmas day (genuinely) but I think the pressure of it all made it much worse for her.

She is a bit run down after a long school term and a few late nights but I don’t think actually ill but is exhausting to be with.

We allow TV (trying to reduce...) but this will be approx 1.5 hrs a day over Xmas (a film) with her sister and possibly a bit of iPad game playing by herself (DD2 is 2.5 so don’t like her watching much more). We get out and about every day to the park / climbing / biking etc she’s outdoorsy but obviously can’t do this all day everyday mainly as DD2 is tired and so is DD1 although she can’t see it.

We are home for the whole duration over Xmas (small ish house) and I’m already exhausted by the constant shouting / screaming / tantrums and emotional outbursts.DD2 also in quite a tricky (normal) 2yr old stage also. DH is great but also struggling with her.

Anyone have any tips for bringing about some calm...or how they get their kids to stop shouting / jumping all over the furniture and acting like a wild animal 😉?

The one saving grace is she sleeps brilliantly from 7.30-7 every night most likely due to exhaustion. She is bright and although can read and write competently can’t currently calm down enough to do so by herself!

Sorry but sounds like typical children behaviour 3 days before Christmas. All I can think of is getting them out for a walk/ run so they get out some of there energy. Bad combination tired from hectic end of term and excited for Christmas.

DM always used to get us to make giant Christmas pictures and homemade paper chains to keep us occupied!

Hope you have a very Happy Christmas

Yes I suppose it is typical! I think it’s more that she actually makes herself feel ill (she says this) which worries me a bit but after doing a bit of mumsnet research it does sound like it’s very common!

She is quite an excitable child at all times of the year so I suppose it’s to be expected that Christmas is über excitement. I was probably exactly the same at 5.
