Advised to put breast milk in baby's eyes?!

Hi all. I went to Boots today to get drops for 5 month old's eyes as one is red, slightly swollen and very gungy. Pharmacist said she couldn't sell me anything for a baby over the counter and I'd need them prescribed.
The GP this afternoon refused to prescribe anything and has instead advised putting breast milk in baby's eyes three times a day!
Is this a thing? Has anyone done it? Did it work??

It’s a thing. It works. Don’t worry. Just squeeze

Sleepingbunnies · 18/12/2017 20:20

It worked for us! Smile

Icantdancedontaskme · 18/12/2017 20:20

Yep it works. Also works to help relieve stuffed noses (few drops up nose) rashes and stings/cuts/scratches as they get older.

Yes! Breastmilk is also good as a moisturiser on baby's skin, and a few drops up their nose when they are snotty can work wonders.

WindyWednesday · 18/12/2017 20:21

I did this. It works. Few drops on the end of your finger dripped in to babies eye.

Katescurios · 18/12/2017 20:21

You can also wipe with a cotton wool pad dipped in cooled boiled water. My LG had a blocked tear duct till she was just gone 1. Every time she got a cold she would get lots of gunk in that eye which irritated it.

Owllady · 18/12/2017 20:22

Yes, it works. Those crazy pharmacists :o

Pennywhistle · 18/12/2017 20:22

Yep, it works. Awesome stuff breastmilk.

Christmascardqueen · 18/12/2017 20:22

Starlight2345 · 18/12/2017 20:22

yep.I did it for my DS when he was a baby now aged 10/

greeeen · 18/12/2017 20:25

This worked great for us.

Note3 · 18/12/2017 20:25

Yep definately works. High in antiseptic properties as well as all the other good qualities

LillyBugg · 18/12/2017 20:27

Can I ask how you get it into stuffy noses? I find it hard to hand express which is perhaps why I can’t work out how you do it...?

MonChoufleur123 · 18/12/2017 20:28

Wow amazed! Had never heard of this at all before... Glad to hear it works. I've been cleaning with cooled boiled water for the last two days with no success so I'll give it a go. Poor baby sometimes gets sprayed in the face when my boobs are really full anyway so maybe I can just aim it towards his eye?! Thanks all!

It works amazingly

outputgap · 18/12/2017 20:32

It's very satisfying when you aim good! Enjoy!

outputgap · 18/12/2017 20:34

Oh, and my GP said the trick with cleaning with cooled boiled water is to do it all the time, like half hourly if needed. She said don't ever let gunk sit in the eye at all.

TheVanguardSix · 18/12/2017 20:35

As others said, it's go. Up the nose too.

IheartCaptainHolt · 18/12/2017 20:48

Up the nose is hard but it's worth it. I basically had to stuff my nipple up the nostril and squirt. The baby was outraged at the waste of milk but it made him sneeze and loads of snot came out.

LillyBugg · 18/12/2017 20:50

I think maybe I can’t do it up the nose because I can’t ‘squirt’ Blush

GummyGoddess · 18/12/2017 20:59

Strangely helps cuts heal faster too, I experimented on myself when I cut my leg as I thought it would be useful information for the day DC cuts himself. One side left alone, the other had milk put on it a couple of times a day. The milk side healed so much faster!

silkpyjamasallday · 18/12/2017 21:01

Breast milk is magical stuff, gungy eyes, snotty noses, rashes all solved with a bit of milk, anything at all suspected to be the matter with DD and I'd put breast milk on it and usually problem solved.

yellowplumpreserves · 18/12/2017 21:08

Yes! It really works. I hand expressed some into a bowl then used a medicine syringe (like you'd use for Calpol) to drop it in.

Littleraincloud · 18/12/2017 21:23

Squirting it dislodges the mucous better than anything as obviously no lint gets left either

chloechloe · 18/12/2017 21:49

Breast milk is great for loads of things as it has antibacterial properties!

Not sure if you know this, but you should always clean eyes from the outside in, towards the tear ducts, which seems counterintuitive at first.
