Changing formula

Hello all ,

Do any of you have any experience of changing formula?

My son was on sma pro up to 7 weeks. We have most of his wind under control with infacol and dr browns bottles etc.

After discussing with a hv his constant farting , moaning after a feed , arching his back , becoming distressed when pooing and crying plus his harder stools she suggested trying aptamil. His poo is now yellow and looser again after a day and a half but the fussing is still there after a feed , If anything it seems worse for him.

How long did you give it before deciding that the new formula wasn't any better? When did you see an improvement?

He is burping by the way , After every 30-60ml and is gaining weight well.

We had this and switched to Hipp formula. Noticed a difference after a few days but I believe they say to give it 2 weeks.

Thank you , so a day and half is too soon to judge?

Can I ask what you switched from?

We switched from aptamil to hipp as aptamil was making ds vomit a lot and he seemed uncomfortable. Noticed an improvement within a couple of days with hipp, but it did turn out he had silent reflux and is now on ranitidine- I think a combination of that and changing formula helped for us.

Thank you Humv, I'll keep an eye on it and make a gp appointment if it doesn't improve.

Just be cautious as the gp will probably prescribe gaviscon to begin with and it causes constipation so if your son already struggles with pooing, he may struggle more on it. Personally that’s one of the best things I found about hipp, his poos were a lot looser than when he was on aptamil which meant more nappy changes for us but less discomfort for him! His poos are actually only now beginning to look like proper poos in terms of solidity as he’s weaning now.. sorry, too much information!

Yes , gaviscon was mentioned by a gp I saw before the hv suggested a change . I've heard from rl friends that it's not always helpful.

It's so difficult isn't it? I feel like I'm hurting him every time I feed him.

I'm glad your son is coping better.

Changed from aptamil. I also think my son has silent reflux but is much better with the change of formula, sleeping elevated and keeping upright during and after a feed.

And has regular looser stools. Before he had very hard ones every few days. Bless him Sad

I know, it’s awful when you feel so helpless and can’t figure out what to do.. but you’re doing a great job and he’s lucky to have you. Hope you manage to get it sorted, please keep us updated if you can!

If you change to hipp I’d definitely recommend keeping one of your sma tubs and emptying the hipp formula into that- the hipp containers are a pain in the bum as they’re only made of cardboard and the formula goes everywhere and gets wasted. I ended up buying an sma tin and putting it all into that and it’s so much less frustrating. What I do now as well is every month or so I sterilise the tin using Milton sterilising tablets to stop any bits of old formula staying inside as I don’t change the tin. Hope that helps and good luck!
