Hi everyone, how you all doing, hope you are all good. I'm a New mum to be and was wondering when is the best time to start shopping for our new arrival. I'm 3 months now, and don't want to leave things to last minute, I have made a shopping list n done some window shopping, but haven't bought anything as I think it may be too soon. Please advise on what you think , thank you all x

34 weeks.

I think everyone has their own way of doing things. We had most our essentials by 20 weeks but I know we are earlier than most. But a refurbished lounge and Christmas to prepare for meant we could stagger our expenses that way. If you’ve places to store your buys then I’d advise trying different things out, see what suits and take advantage of having 6 months to get things when there’s a good deal! And don’t find one of those lists that’s a mile long and think you need it all 😊 can always add too post baby. That’s our plan anyway but everyone will have their own way.

Thanks, I do have storage space, and was told to make a list of things I need, Kuz friends and family said tell us what you need, and we will gift you. Makes sense in a way, so you don't have two of everything and will be handy if you strapped for cash, even tho I'm saving. I've done measurements for furniture and my research just waiting to buy them really. Thanks for your tip.

I'm 22 weeks and plan to be 30 before I buy anything.

I would say 3rd trimester. Otherwise, it really does just sit around and get in the way. I don't think I've really been able to focus on what we needed and what needed to get done until then each time. If money is an issue, put a bit of savings aside each money, so you have a pot to spend at the end. Also, don't go crazy. Buy essentials and then once baby arrives, decide what you really need, so you don't waste money on things that never get used.

Where I am from, you were not allowed to bring anything baby related into the house until the baby was born. Stored in other peoples' houses, fine. Not in your own home though. I think it was borne of a time when people lost a lot of babies and then had the grief of clearing out a pre-prepared room or something. Some superstition anyway. Really wise to pick out essentials for first couple of months like car-seat, moses basket, the joy of picking out little clothes, sterilising stuff, bibs all that stuff. But as I said, where I am from, you couldn't bring any of it into the house. I do come from a strange place

I think it depends, if you have a nursery to put it in then go ahead I did with things like the cot, other furniture, teddies and starting to think of colour themes etc as I feel this is like early bonding with the babe. Wouldn't be too fast buying clothes, nappies as you don't know till much later how big the babe might be when born and could end up wasting a lot of money.. when you do though I got an amazon prime account and they do subscribe and save for nappies, wipes as this was a life saver 😀😀 Good luck Thanks

I waited until after 20 weeks as I wanted to know what gender the baby was and it seemed like a good time. I was 16 weeks at Christmas and got a couple of things in the sales as there were such good deals

Eeeeek2 · 12/12/2017 22:26

I did lots of mental shopping after the first scan ie working out what I wanted re pram car seat etc. Then I looked out for deals and at eBay.

Lots of mumsnet research.

Two bits of advice,

Don’t buy many newborn clothes but more 0-1 or 0-3, my ds didn’t fit newborn as he was too long. It doesn’t matter if they wear bigger stuff because they’re not moving around much.
The shops don’t shut once baby is born so if you’re not sure whether it’ll be useful - wait.

In mamas and papas and John Lewis (and probably others) you can buy baby stuff and arrange collection/delivery weeks or months in future if want it done but superstitious or don't want to store it

LittleBirdBlues · 12/12/2017 22:37

Best advice I've ever been given is: only buy stuff when you need it.

Within reason of course! But it's so hard getting it right as first time parents, you are likely to buy too much of one thing and not enough of another. We ended up with too many Muslin cloths, too many vests but not enough sleep suits, a pram that we hardly used because he always wanted to be in he sling, and a whole cupboard full of cloth nappies that in he end weren't for us.

Honestly, a newborn baby until 4 months doesn't need much. Certainly no toys etc. So try to practice some restrain now and then enjoy shopping with your baby when it arrives.

And congratulations. Smile
