Nappies needed for a big 3yo and 10 week old can the same nappies do for both with different sized wraps?

Or is this too much to hope for?
Where can I go where I can get advise on the best nappies for us? We were given some 0-3 bambino mio wraps and lots of rectangular nappies which I've been using for the baby but we will need to buy new wraps soon and I liked the look of the totsbots, all fluffy and soft looking. Would the nappy inside bits I have work with those?
What is out there for a big 3yo who still wets at night?
HELP!!

nappyladt does excellant advice.what bits inside nappy do you mean?

mikkamakkamoo · 20/04/2007 18:38

It's a piece of double thickness cotton that you fold into three and put inside the wrap, don't know if it has special name maybe it actually the nappy part! lol

its a prefold.you wont need them inside only extra bit youd need in tots or similar is liner or at night something to boost.

or do you mean the tots wraps?sorry im easily confused!

mikkamakkamoo · 20/04/2007 18:47

Oh no! blind leading the blind I think then. Well, I bought some fleece things shaped liked a huge sanitary towel which I think are a booster...or I may have just bought huge sanitary towels!
God this is no good. Are the totsbots like a kushie then...you fling the whole thing in the washer ? (it doesn't come to bits.)
I'm going to need wraps as well then ... I really don't understand this...and sadly went to the nappylady site and didn't fair much better there either! I didn't think it could be this complicated.

OP posts:
kittypants · 20/04/2007 18:59

no the totsbots nappies need seperate wrap.the sanitry towel things you have do sound like boosters, how thick are they?you can get microfibre cloths cheap from tescos which are great for putting in over night.youll need liner, either fleece or paper.
did you go on the nappy lady tailored questionnaire form, you fill it in and they get back to you?you dont have to buy from them ,its free advice.

Flamesparrow · 20/04/2007 19:04

I'm confused... are you wanting to use the prefolds (rectangle nappies) with tots wraps, or new shaped nappies that will fit both?

(sorry for the delay.. very long phone call)

kittypants · 20/04/2007 19:06

hooray for flame!resident expert!

Flamesparrow · 20/04/2007 19:07

Right.. the other posts weren't there when I started

Tots fluffy things are shaped nappies and need wraps.

If you want some that will fit both children I would recommend bambineo instead - they are slightly larger so last on bigger children (although large 3 yr old could be pushing it - I'll measure the tabs and tell you how far round it can go!).

If you get the nippa version you fold down the front and it fits your baby too.

mikkamakkamoo · 20/04/2007 19:33

Ooh I don't know!
erm...I have the rectangle bits already so what doI get to go with them?
BUT I also have some fleece thingys as well...does this give me any options?
I don't know what a shaped nappy is I'm afraid! I liked your site btw, what is a minki, that looked sooo cute!

OP posts:
mikkamakkamoo · 20/04/2007 19:35

Whats a nippa?
Sorry but I really am truly clueless

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 20/04/2007 19:56

Hmm... are the fleecey things something cotton/microfibre but fleece topped, or just pieces of fleece? (Got a camera handy?)

How have you been getting on with the prefolds so far (will help decide if you should stick with them or change to shaped).

Shaped nappies - picture a disposable made of terry... its like that, it is the absorbant part of the nappy (like your prefolds), and then needs a wrap over the top.

Nappy nippas are the modern nappy pins. They are a T shaped bit of rubber, with little plastic grippers on each end, you hook in one side (to the loops in the terry), then stretch to hook the other, then pull down and hook in the bottom and it holds the nappy together by tension.

Flamesparrow · 20/04/2007 19:57

Minkis are wraps with a pocket in - you put something absorbant inside (your prefolds would be fine), and then do the whole thing up.

They are very bulky though so aren't great for daytime.

mikkamakkamoo · 22/04/2007 12:45

Would you recommend anything in particular Flame? I don't mind the prefolds now I'm used to them. The fleece things are like a flannelette material (cotton). I quite like velcro fastenings for the baby, but 3 yo needs knicker type nighttime nappy.
Shaped nappies sound good. The easier the better really. I've noticed the prefolds seem to take a long time to dry unless it's a very sunny day. Is anything faster than them?

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 22/04/2007 13:01

Fluffles are faster - they are made of microfibre and where it is a manmade fabric it dries very very fast. They come in nippa or popper fastening.

For your 3yo the only reliable knicker style that I trust are motherease bedwetter pants, but they cost a small fortune

mikkamakkamoo · 22/04/2007 13:37

Ok I'm armed! I visited a site from The Green Parent marketplace called twinkleontheweb and I'm a bit more clued up.
I think I'd like hook/loop fastenings, I'll continue to use the prefolds which means I can 'stuff' doesn't it? I like the idea of fleecey type wraps. What are my options now Flame?
How much are the bedwetter pants and do you stock them?
Is there anything else I need to consider?

£15.65 - £17.65... I don't think they are listed yet, but if you are wanting some then I will get them put on asap (You should probably need the £15.65 ones... My DD is nearly 4 with a huge bum and still in those).

Fleece wraps... do you want ones that are fleecey feeling, or with the air circulation of fleece?

Wacky wraps have a fleece outer, but a waterproof inner, whereas tots bots fleece are just fleece which you need to ensure you change the nappies frequently as too much wetness + compression can make the moisture soak through to clothes

mikkamakkamoo · 22/04/2007 14:59

Yes please I'd like the 15.95 ones. Will 3 of them see him?
Is there much difference in the care of the wraps, just fleece, fleece feel or waterproof backing? The wraps I have been using are waterproof backed, plus if I go for fleece what will last him the longest through the night? He's a good wetter and I'm using Nature disposables atm because I'd be changing him every hour otherwise!
Will I need 2 different systems for day/night for the baby?

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 22/04/2007 15:23

You just need more absorbance for nighttime - bamboo is best, or microfibre because they absorb the most. Its normally best to try the first night with whichever nappy you choose and about 3 extra boosters, you can then reduce the amount of boosters as you work out how many you need.

Care - they are all just the same as the wraps you use now, the only difference is the wicking issue. I use fleec/wool 95% of the time and only ever have slight dampness if he has been in the carseat a while and the buckle presses in (and even then it is very slight and not needing a change of trousers). I do find the tots red wraps more reliable - they have 2 layers of fleece all over whereas the patterned ones have one layer, with a second one just down the centre.

3 of the bedwetters does us fine - I was every 2-3 days and it seems to work out well. I'll get them listed tonight or tomorrow morning for you (whichever small children co-operate for!!) - I'll post on here when I have

mikkamakkamoo · 22/04/2007 16:28

K thanks Flame, much appreciated. I'll get back to you with the baby's order as I seem to have to decide on a couple more issues. Do people tend to buy one nappy and see how they go? I could do that, buy a couple of different ones and presumably sell them again, see what works for us. What would you recommend to try out and is this worth it for resale value?

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 22/04/2007 17:32

I think its definately worth getting a few different types and seeing what you prefer - a lot of shops (inc me) do starter kits and you get a selection (slightly cheaper than if you buy individually), and they normally have a great resale value on the nappy lady classifieds section.
