bad pooh leaks with reusables- advice needed

Hi there,
Fluffle with a motherease wrap- and a 9 poundish baby (but slimish legs i think). He is taking iron which makes him save all his pooh for one massive moment and so far (only been using reusables for 3 days) both times we have had huge leakage with the above combo. He's breast fed so it's all quite runny. Thing is it looks ok (the nappy fit), ... but not sure what to do. I only bought 2 fluffles, so maybe just accept they are not the nappy for him. If so, does anyone have any suggestions for good containment/fit for a slimmer baby? We have yet to have the monumental pooh moment if the bamboozles/ fuzzi bunz so not sure how they will cope yet.
cheers for any advice

Poo explosions aren't uncommon with new babies - we had lots!! As long as the wrap catches it I wouldn't worry. I found the Rikki (velcro) wraps with gussets were better at this stage than the Airflow (popper) ones.

Washersaurus · 20/04/2007 16:04

I also found that the bimbles and size 1 rainbow tots were quite good for containment (fluffles weren't around when DS was born)

hettie · 20/04/2007 17:01

erm yes the thing is that the wrap doesn't contain it- we're talking all up the leg! Am i doing something wrong/ wrong size shape?

I'm a fluffle user, I did find that they suddenly worked loads better when ds got some fat on his legs. A fleece liner is good for containing poo and agree with Washer that wraps with gussets are better for the poo too. The trick with the wrap is doing it up firmly so that it is well sealed around the legs but not tight. Same with the nappy, keep going and you somehow get the knack of it! Sometimes though a poo will come along that no nappy in the world could contain!

Flamesparrow · 20/04/2007 20:04

Are you popper or nippa?

Indith is right about the wrap tightness too

Flamesparrow · 20/04/2007 20:05

That came out wrong - I meant as in "I was going to say the same as her" not She's right

LilRedWG · 20/04/2007 20:05

TBH - I didn't get on with the Motherease wraps. I use Nature Babies applix ones and they're great, but we didn't start using washables until DD was five months, so no real advice, sorry

Indith · 20/04/2007 20:07

Oooh flame thinks I'm right about something nappy related

By the way been meaning to ask you who won in the fluffle vs kwick flip drying race if you've done it.

IdrisTheDragon · 20/04/2007 20:07

I didn't start with reusbales until DD was about 6 months old but I have heard that rikki wraps can be better for keeping in new born poo than airflow ones.

Washersaurus · 20/04/2007 20:08

Just don't give up on the nappies because of the poo leakage - in reality I think most disposables would struggle to contain those explosive bf poos aswell!

Flamesparrow · 20/04/2007 20:09

I completely forgot!!! He's wearing a fluffle tonight (bought a lovely new fabric style one!!), and will put the quick flip on him tomorrow... keep posting and reminding me to do it - will be washing on Monday (best to nudge me on Feb 06 post natal!)

Are you using airflows hettie? They can sometimes be problematic on newborns because of the lack of gussets - rikkis less problem, or nature babies

Flamesparrow · 20/04/2007 20:10

In a disp it would be up his back as well as down his leg

Indith · 20/04/2007 20:11

Very true Washer. We had ds in disposables on holiday the other day and he leaked on my gran's armchair! Not had a poo leak in reusables in ages (out of the wrap that is, he is good at building up lots of wind with his poo to ensure it goes in all directions!)

Indith · 20/04/2007 20:12

Ok I'll stalk you flame!

chirpygirl · 20/04/2007 20:14

I used velcro motherease much better until DD started on solids, it's the extra gusset that catches it as the others have said.

Now she is a bit bigger I rarely use rikki and it's poppers all the way!

Hathor · 20/04/2007 20:16

Poo can explode digustingly from disposable nappies too. Usually when you are wearing something pretty and pale coloured.

maisiemog · 21/04/2007 21:19

Side-fastening nappies like Sandy's are fantastic at keeping in poop. We had the exact problem you describe with our little boy and it wasn't just for the first 6 months either.
He ended up settling down a bit, but I always felt happier when he was in side-fastening, just in case.
Another excellent nappy for containing poop is the nappy nation, something about the leg ruffles.
I used to love Poochies, but I don't think anyone is making them right now.
P'tits Dessous are another, pricey, side-fastening nappy.
YOU can pick up Sandy's quite cheaply on buy and sells like UKParentslounge.co.uk or Nappy Lady classifieds.
Hope that helps.
Oh and bulky but also with the most amazing leg elastic are Minki Huggles.

hettie · 22/04/2007 16:27

OK, well thanks for al the advice, think the motherease is the rikki (it's velcro and has leg gussets). Will look at the sandy's and minki.
You may well be right about leakage happening in a disposable, but would like to try and find a solution. We have two bamboozles with aplix which seem a bit better.
You know what would be good though is a bamboo/hemp aplix fastening nappy with a built in fleece liner (size one) does such a thing exist does anyone know?

DaisyMOO · 22/04/2007 18:31

I wonder if the fleece is stopping the poo from absorbing into the nappy and so if overflowing. Putting a paper liner in might help (the one a bit like kitchen roll which is more absorbent) or even turning the Fluffle inside out so that the fleece lining is on the outside. Also doing it up more loosely might give more room inside the nappy so it doesn't overflow.

hettie · 22/04/2007 20:46

mmme, hadn't thought of looser- worth a try. I think part of the problem might be the largeness of the fluffle in comparison to the wrap......

It's funny you should mention the bamboozle, because we had leaks of varying sizes, with every poop.
I think the fabric kind of sagged when it got wet and the fit around the legs wasn't as good at with the cotton version of tots.
Overall, tots didn't work for us and weren't reliable enough on the leaks front.
Did I say this?? (absent-minded attack)I think there is a Minki Waffle, which wasn't very popular, so is probably selling at huuuge discount on Ebay now.
If you have a look at my nappy review blog I think there are reviews for the Waffle on there in the Minki section.
A really good place to buy beauuuutiful side-fastening nappies is in the US, there is a massive selection and the exchange rate is excellent so all nappies are effectively half-price, plus postage.
There are some lovely (and horrible) nappies on here .
But I don't want to get you started on a nappy addiction so ignore that last comment.

hettie · 23/04/2007 18:06

oh god don't- dh already thinks I have gone nappy mad- ("are you ordering more!") Have a sandys, 2 wonderoos and a bambeasy on the way.....
thing is will i sell the others when i comit to one....
AND why the hell are cloth nappies so adictive- truly weird and not somehting I ever thought I would get into!

OP posts:
maisiemog · 24/04/2007 00:31

It is very strange. Who would have known they were so addictive.
Maybe it's because they are so diddy, and so collectable.
Nobody has ever told me how much they love buying disposable nappies, and how they can't wait to try every brand of disposable nappy and how gorgeous they look on their baby.
I don't know. [shrugs]
