Excessive wind

Hi, I'm sure there are similar posts here but just looking for some advice.

My 4.5 month old daughter has always had excessive wind from the day she was born. It seems to have gotten worse recently, to the point where she has been screaming in the night in pain trying to get her wind out.

I changed her milk to aptamil comfort around 2 weeks ago and for a week it worked perfectly, she had no wind in the nights and slept great. However, now she is incredibly windy in the nights again.

I'm wondering whether to change milk again, but I'm not sure if this is the best solution. I have tried everything that I can buy over the counter e.g gripe water etc, tried all the farting exercises. Nothing helps.

Anyone been through this and managed to find a solution? Thanks

Does she have any other symptoms like mucus in her poo?

Nikster11 · 05/12/2017 12:05

Hi, she occasionally has mucus in her poo but not every time.

Thanks

My DD is/was like this (much much better now at 7 months).

Try to get some burps up after each feed. Look up different winding techniques online.

Then the thing that made the biggest difference to DD once she showed signs of pain was to push her knees into her tummy to help get the wind out the other end.

The reason I asked about the mucus is because that’s another sign of an allergy. Have a read of this on Allergy Uk and see what you think 🙂

Nikster11 · 07/12/2017 21:58

That's great, thank you for the info all.

I took her to the doctors but she was reluctant to prescribe anything to help and said to come back if it persists after 6 months (yay to another 6 weeks of windy sleep!).

I asked about allergies and suggested changing her milk to either a lactose free or a CMA one. She said it was a good idea to change her milk to see if this would help- but she didn't offer to give me any unfortunately!

We have changed her to lactose free for the time being to see if this will help!

Hi
I have a similar baby but she is breastfed. Terrible wind up until 12 than improved only to come back at 4.5 months. I tried a milk free diet last time and all the gripe water, colief etc last time and nothing made any difference. I am completely exhausted and don't know what to do. Have resorted to co- sleeping last night as a last resort to get some sleep which I hate and feel is a big step back. I don't have any advice but can offer you so much sympathy- fingers crossed this will pass soon x

@Happy has your baby been checked for tongue tie?

Nikster11 · 08/12/2017 20:51

Hi Happy,

It's so hard isn't it. Going to bed and knowing they will wake up hourly!

Hopefully it is something that will pass as all the doctors seem to think. That doesn't really help for the time being though unfortunately!

I have also returned to co sleeping and have noticed that she will sleep brilliantly on her side next to me and the wind pain doesn't seem to affect her anywhere near as much in this position.

Good luck and hopefully we will get some sleep soon!! X

No signs of tongue tie - she feeds brilliantly.

No change here, still hourly wake ups and cracking wind!! She burps really well so i think that it must be a phase in digestive system maturing.... Strangely it doesn't really bother her until late evening.

Fingers crossed this will pass for us all soon x

not to make light of the matter, but some humans are just extra windy. the day DD2 came home from music camp saying she had won the Senior BOYS burping competition made me so proud.Hmm She is now 24 years old and well known for her spectacular, and extremely annoying, burping which, from the sound of it, you would think came from a 20 stone rugby player and not a dainty size 1- female.

My baby creates a lot of wind and struggles a lot to burp/fart. They told me she has milk allergy, passing through breastfeeding so I'm now on a milk and soy free diet crossing my finger that it will improve. It's been exhausting. If possible ask and HV or GP to refer your baby to a specialist allergy nurse. Could be the same. Good luck!

My 16 week old has awful wind at night which wakes him up and he can get very upset with it. It only affects him during the night and he also is much more settled when he's sleeping on his side.

He also has a possible dairy intolerance so I'm going dairy free (he's breast fed) to see if there's any improvement.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 10/12/2017 22:01

I remember giving ours dettinox drops before feeding when they were really windy - worked a treat.

Bartos · 10/12/2017 22:16

It's incredible how so many things have milk in it. Went to Christmas Market, asked for a German sausage, the idea was to have the bun with the sausage, all bread and even the sausage had milk... My daughter also gets worse in the evenings and she gets relief on her side. The consequence is that not rarely I let her sleep on my lap to ensure she rests, but even like that she wakes up with pain. It's agonising to see her like that. Good luck! I'm trying to see the positive, milk free chocolate is so expensive that I might actually loose some weight :)

SunglassCat · 12/12/2017 21:02

Hello! I so feel you! My 5 week old DS has got terrible wind now, he wakes up every 20mins to fart whilst in pain. We have started him on Infacol and I have my hand resting on his tummy whilst he is asleep. Do not know if it helps, but it seems to!

I will make him a rice sock pack later and see if that helps.

Good luck! (to us)

Bartos · 12/12/2017 21:28

Infacol stopped working for my baby. Had to start her on Gripe water and can see a significant difference.
Anyone with experience in the dairy free diet due to baby milk allergy? I've been doing it for approximately 5 days and my baby still has weird poo's, very liquid and sometimes green... I'm wondering if they haven't identified the allergy correctly...

Callamia · 12/12/2017 21:34

My 4.5mo has become like this too. I think it’s to do with teething. He dribbles like crazy, gums everything, and has a bit of a cold so his poo is more mucousy right now. He’s also feeding quite badly, so I think he’s taking in more air when feeding - his wind is quite something.

ADuckNamedSplash · 13/12/2017 12:31

You say you've tried all the over the counter stuff, but have you tried them in conjunction with the Aptamil Comfort? The combination of Comfort and Dentinox works well for DD. We've also found that the vibrate function on her swingy chair is good for triggering bowel activity. Try keeping her up on your shoulder as much as you can too - DD often burps spontaneously when in that position.
