Baby crying after every feed

My 7 week old newborn appears to be at war with his own digestive system. He was fine up until 3 weeks when he went into hospital with an infection. Since being on antibiotics, his guts are causing him all sorts of issues.

He is excessively windy, to the point it causes him severe distress. We also suspect silent reflux. We've got to the point where he screams after 90% of feeds. He has can have random screaming bouts throughout the day. He throws himself around, arching his back, kicking and is utterly inconsolable.

He's very difficult to wind and thrashes and grunts all night long. He's mostly breastfed, with one d pressed bottle a day in an anti colic bottle and the very occasional bottle of formula.

We tried Infacol and Gripe Water but no improvement. The GP has just prescribed Colief.

He started ranitidine a week ago and I think we saw a little improvement (slightly less inconsolable screaming, slightly more smiles) but nothing radical. Fristratingly, it seems to be causing him diarrhoea. He used to poop several times a day. Now he only goes once, but it's an almighty poonami that leaks everywhere. I'm getting to the point that I'm scared to take him out because the poos are so explosive. He didn't poo yesterday, was so unsettled all night and screamed all morning until he finally exploded at lunchtime today. I feel like the ranitidine has created a new problem. The GP said to see if it settles down - anyone know if this is a common side effect and if it can go away?

Any ideas gratefully received. He's be such a happy chap if his digestive system wasn't wrecking havoc. I know all babies have some degree of wind and an immature gut but he does seem to be suffering excessively and it makes him so miserable Sad

Mine had similar symptoms with cows milk protein intollerance. I bf and had to cut out all dairy and soya from my diet (including hidden ingredients such as in bread). They could only have prescription formula, which they hated, so ended up just breast feeding them. One grew out of it completely, the other one can have hidden milk but isn't keen on yoghurt, milk, ice cream etc.

Antibiotics can cause temporary lactose intolerance - in which case cutting out cow and soya milk won't help.

Hi OP. I have a very similar baby so have lots of sympathy! Mine is only 4 weeks so we are persevering with infacol and gripe water for the next 2 weeks before GP will consider medication.

One thing I thought I'd mention is that the GP questioned me about his poos because apparently diarrhoea like you describe would suggest cows milk intolerance. Could you eliminate dairy as a trial?

I can't help with most of your post, but just wanted to say that it is normal for the number of poos to reduce so that might just be coincidence that it happened when you started the ranitidine.

Have you tried gaviscon? My 4 week old dd was prescribed it for reflux as she had the same symptoms. It seems to give her instant relief and breaks the cycle of her feeding for comfort then being in pain from the feeding etc. You will need it on prescription for a tiny baby but worth a try if the other meds aren't working.
