I'm doing a Masters in Applied Behaviour Analysis which is relevant to my job as a speech and lang. therapist to people with learning disabilities.
Only trouble is,I have a f/t job,a p/t business, kids of 2 and 6 and a dh who is abroad most of the time.

Not enough hours uin the day...

Criminology - through doing the PhD I am also teaching and researching.

Do you need a PhD for your job, or would it be for yourself?

OP posts:
moondog · 18/04/2007 19:50

No.
I don't strictly need the MSc either but it's what I'm interested in.

Criminology-all the rage now isn't it?

Jazzicatz · 18/04/2007 19:53

Oh yes - student numbers are very high, but it tails off considerably once you get to post-grad stage.

I am probably the wrong person to ask as I have been very fortunate with Supervision, but I would recomend anyone to do it.

ooh moondog I have worked with lots of SALTs and was involed in the new CELF (mean naything to you?)

runnervt · 18/04/2007 19:58

I've just applied for funding to do a part-time PhD at work. Don't quite know how things would work out time-wise but I thought I'd apply and see what happens. I've got one ds (11mo) but would probably like another one before I'd finish studying. Not sure how that would work out either.....

moondog · 18/04/2007 19:59

Oh yes DT!!
Copy in my office!
(In what wa was that?)

Jazzicatz · 18/04/2007 20:00

Well I have to say it is sometimes really hard and I have weeks when I don't think I can go on, but it passes, and through talking to other friends doing a PhD without children, they feel the same.

updated it and have bought out new version (IV) - it is now in colour!

eca · 18/04/2007 20:01

hi Jazzi

I'm doing a PhD. Am about to have 1st baby (was due 14 April) and pregnancy has been a nightmare (really sick etc) and so I've had a lot of time off recently, but I'm hoping that once life has settled down with the lo, I'll get back into the swing of things. It gives me hope to see other mums doing them that maybe I'll get it finished one day!

moondog · 18/04/2007 20:01

What do you do DT?

Jazzicatz · 18/04/2007 20:02

How far have you got eca?

OP posts:
DimpledThighs · 18/04/2007 20:26

research blah blah deafness blah blah psychometric/language assessment blah blah

moondog · 18/04/2007 20:27

phd dt?

skidaddle · 09/05/2007 17:34

Hi Jazzicate,

I'm doing a PhD too (3r year, psychology) and have one dd (18months) and no.2 on the way. Has been fine so-far but ms and knackeredness has not been helping recently. It's hard to imagine the day that we actually submit the damned things, isn't it?

dt - that sounds very interesting - what do you look at exactly?

ScoobyC · 13/05/2007 19:47

Hello all!
I am also doing a phd (human rights law). I have an 11mo ds born nearly 2 years into it. Eca and skidaddle it is really nice to know I'm not the only person to have children during my phd!! My university make me feel like the strangest person in the universe!
I am just starting my third year but not my final year cos I managed to get my uni to agree to xtend it by a year when I had my ds.
Has anyone faced any difficulties due to pregnancy or childcare? Personally I faced a battle to get my uni to agree to continue paying me my studentship when I went partime after ds was born. I'm interested as to whether other people have faced similar things.

hatwoman · 13/05/2007 19:51

ooo scoobyc - what are you doing it in? and where? (if that's not too nosey or too hi-jacky) I just finished an LLM in public international law with a human rights focus. just trying to turn my dissertation into an article. I've worked in hrs for getting on for a decade now.

ScoobyC · 13/05/2007 19:53

Skidaddle, also meant to say that I understand how you feel trying to work while pg - I found it really hard to focus when I was pg.

I also agree - submitting has seemed like such a vague fantasy for so long!! Although I just had to submit a chapter and a detailed research proposal/plan of work and defend it in order to upgrade from MPhil to PhD and doing that did make final submission seem slightly more doable!

ScoobyC · 13/05/2007 19:56

Hi Hatwoman!
My title is:
The legitimacy of enforcing rights to basic subsistence through the civil and political rights of the ECHR....!

I've just completed a chapter on ECHR cases involving the enforcement of subsistence rights - ie rights to food, shelter, healthcare, unpolluted air/water etc.
What's your specific focus?

hatwoman · 13/05/2007 20:02

well, I'm not a phd student, but for the LLM I did refugee law, law of use of force and armed conflict, international criminal law and a dissertation on ESCR in armed conflict with a focus on the right to water - protecting water through the ICESCR and IHL. your subject sounds interesting - I have to admit I haven't looked at the ECHR and esc rights much at all.

ScoobyC · 13/05/2007 20:13

Hi Hatwoman,
Sounds like a bit of crossover. I've done some work on refugees re ECHR cases on breaches of Article 3 due to deportation. Also interested in the right to water. Your LLM sounds interesting - also sounds like you covered a lot! Not surprised you haven't looked at ECHR and ESCRs - not much literature on that - hence why I'm doing my phd on it!

You considering doing a phd? Are you going to publish your LLM?

hatwoman · 13/05/2007 21:07

my dissertation's a bit long for publication as it is - I'm trying to cut it down - but it's proving difficult to find time. I thought about a phd and I'm not sure. I feel a bit old to be starting an academic career from scratch. and I'm not sure what else I'd do post phd. are you looking to stay in academia?

I feel we have hi jacked this thread. SORRY Jazzicatz. Please everyone return to PHDs/CHILDREN etc in general and not our esoteric topic dicussions! ScoobyC - would be genuinely interested in swapping emails. CAT me if you like.
