Sudden screaming

Last night and night before DD - 5 months - woke up about 2-3 hours after being put down for the night with sudden hysterical screaming. Cuddling didn't comfort her at all, she didn't seem to need winding in that she didn't burp and leg cycling didn't help at all and she was clearly very tired. She was desperately reaching for the back of her head and really sounded like she was in terrible pain - tbh really sounded like she was dying.
In desperation I gave her some calpol and offered a bf - though I think she was sucking for comfort rather than food - and she went to sleep and woke up normally for her middle of the night feed...
She doesn't have a temperature and has been her normal self during the days. I don't like giving her medicine when I have no idea what the matter is... any clues?

Sounds like earache - they don't always get a temperature with it. Worth getting the GP to check at least. It is the only thing that wakes my dd and ds at night apart from teething....
