Teething hell - when will it end?

DD2 is 11mo. For the last two weeks she's really been struggling to fall asleep, rubbing her gums and crying. The last two nights she has been completely inconsolable and awake for 1-2 hours, jamming her whole hand in her mouth. I'm spending hours walking her round in a dark room to get her to sleep and get her back to sleep whereas she previously would settle in the cot.

She has 2 top and 2 bottom teeth already. I can't see where the next ones are due - possibly another 2 top and bottom at the same time.

During the day when she's distracted she's fine, but when it's time to sleep it's awful. I've been giving her Dentinox before naps and then ibuprofen syrup when she won't settle at night, but obviously that takes half an hour to kick in.

It's become so bad that I'm tempted just to give her medicine every 8 hours day and night. Good idea or bad?

Also is there any point in teething gel - I suspect all it does is numb her tongue as it's impossible to get it on the gums!

It ends when they get all there 20 baby teeth

When DS1 was like that I gave him calpol and ibuprofen every two hours during the day for about 5 days straight. I’d time the doses so the last one was ibuprofen 30 mins before bed so he could sleep.

If it’ll stop her being in pain then go for it. If I had toothache I’d be taking all the painkillers I could get my hands on!

Re teething gel, I find it helps if you put it on just after you give medicine as it numbs the gums while you are waiting for the painkillers to kick in

Grin skippy Perhaps the title doesn't fit to the post!

My DD1 on the other hand is nearly 3 and didn't so much as squeak when teething, not even when 6 came through at once...

I would just keep giving ibuprofen until the teeth are through. Like PP says if we are in pain we take something for it. It's not like they will get hooked on it and start swigging it from the bottle.

DD only has 4 to go now thank god!
