If safeguarding were involved with a self harm issue in a school, are social services informed or is it the same thing?

Thanks.

Could anyone point me to the right discussion board for traffic? Thanks.

School safe guarding team don’t always inform SS. It depends on the situation.

Unless they think the parent/carer is a risk to the child and informing the parents means they will destroy evidence then best practice is to tell the parents that SS have been informed.

The term safeguarding just means to keep a child safe from home. The safeguarding team at school would need to be involved with a child who was self harming and would be likely to refer to outside agencies to get support. However they would be unlikely to refer to the local authority safeguarding team (SS) unless they felt that the support in place (school, parents, outside agencies) were still unable to keep the child safe, or that the SH was due to abuse or neglect.

Thank everyone, much appreciated. The child in question (not my child), is receiving all the care and support possible in school but doesn't seem to be stopping her from doing it. I know that it's a very complex thing self harming, and it's not going to stop over night.

It has recently been disclosed to me that this child has been hit and kicked at home, which I've just told safeguarding about at school.

Without going into too much detail, this child has been attention seeking for about a year and the school say the disclosure could be all part of this. Will the school ask her about the recent disclosure?

Yes I would think they will probably ask her. They may pass straight to SS, but in my experience the call handlers at SS want as much information as possible and usually expect you to have spoken to the child, and often informed the parent to!
