this has been an on-going thing... tv worked for a while but now DS getting very upset. we've tried cutting my nails in front of him and cutting ted's too but to no avail... what can we do? we don't want a little boy with sharp claws advice much appreciated
ps. i can't bite them off before someone suggests it(an overbite means this is an impossibility! )

do them when he's asleep? my son didn't like it either

bran · 17/04/2007 16:04

I used to do ds's nails when he was asleep. After a while he got over his hatred of nail cutting and now I can do it while he's watching something interesting on TV.

good suggestions... well I'll try em. Only thing about when he's asleep is we don't want to wake him! my babba seems too keen to be awake to risk it. Tele he's just not v interested in but milk time is worth a try certainly. ta xx

give him an emery board and teach him to file them himself

my dd does this - tesco has some funky emery boards

Do them when he's asleep.

I always used to cut DS's nails too short so it hurt when I did it. Now DH does them most of the time and he is better at it than me!

Also, a trick that worked for us recently with teeth brushing is to do yours infront of him so he can see that ity is ok (we also let him brush ours but I dont think that is a good idea with clippers/scissors!!)

Gingerbear · 17/04/2007 20:30

The Nail Fairy will visit and child gets some stickers in return for nail clippings.
Probably not work with a 1 year old, but works with older kids.

lionheart · 17/04/2007 20:34

Keep a pair of clippers in the car because chances are he'll fall asleep and you can do it by stealth.

UniSarah · 17/04/2007 20:58

Dh holds the limb in question AND distracts with noisey electronic ty. DS still wails and trys to flail, but being fimrly held I can generally get each limb done in a minute or two. I tend to do hands OR feet each week.
Sometimes I can do feet on my own with DS straped in high chair eating biscuit.

PeachesMcLean · 17/04/2007 21:03

Gosh unisarah, that sounds quite something!

Unless he's a really light sleeper you should get away with it. I usually find that half an hour after DS has falled asleep is when he's really flat out. I've done nails, creams and even put antibiotics in his eyes whilst he's asleep like that.

luckylady74 · 17/04/2007 21:04

wrap in large towel or blanket - only have 1 hand out at a time - this is actually what i do for splinter removal, but if needs must!
mine bite their fingernails but if there's a fuss about toenails i'm ashamed to say i sit on them facing their feet - they honestly think this is hilarious and i really don't squash them too much.

nappyzone · 17/04/2007 22:30

we did my dd's while asleep up until about a year ago (shes 4 now!!), it was a torch and clipper job but it got it done without the stress! now she thinks its great so they defo grow out of it and my 5 month old actually giggles at it (thank god as the torch and clipper thinng over a cotbed knacks your back) lol!

Springadora · 17/04/2007 22:32

Buy special round ended ones and let her do it herself (under guidance!). Worked with mine.

muslinattheready · 19/04/2007 13:19

hee hee hee!!! so it's not just us. blimey the lengths one has to go to! Love the torch and clippers scenario. Whilst asleep seems to be the best thing for us as my DS flaps his hands around like crazy. I tried nail files and doing my own in front of him( this worked for tooth brushing) but finger nails... well they just aren't going to happen while he's awake without us terrorising him, or him us for that matter

aha! Mission accomplished. I simply gave DS his fav finger food to eat. Eating is a serious business in our house and requires concentration so while he and I discussed the delights of banana, DH snipped away... Phew. well it worked for us anyway - though how long for we shall see!
