Do I need a crib? What's your experience?

Hi all

Random question I'm afraid. We are being lent a moses basket and a cot, which is great. But I was wondering how long will a moses basket last? The friend who is lending me hers said her DS didn't really like sleeping in it. The problem is the cot is too big really for our bedroom so I was wondering if a crib is a good intermediate idea and how long one might last for? Or would it be a complete waste of money?

I used our moses basket for 6 months with last baby - she's just moved into a crib - or what I call a crib, it's a cot to your brits!

does depend on how big your baby is though, and how much they move around when they sleep. I don't think I"d buy one now, see how you get on first

with both of mine we had a moses basket downstairs (for naps when they are little) and a swinging crib in our room for bedtime - We also had a cot in their own rooms but before putting them into their own cot we moved the crib in, so they got used to the room - then changed them into a cot - if that makes any sense at all.
My dd has just gone into her cot, so I am about to sell the swinging crib as we won't be planning any more dc's I loved the crib, seems like the end of an era

I have a bedsside crib which if you're breastfeeding is a bloody great idea, or I guess a bedside cot would do the job
I never have to leave my bed

They're pretty similar in size tbh , don't think you'd get much extra use out of it.

Try with the moses basket, tbh they are no different from a crib and by 5/6 months when the baby can sit/pull up it will be useless anyway.
I got so many unnecessary things with my first baby and wish I'd just held back or consulted mums who know from experience, lol!

i had a crib i used as a baby for my dc's.

dd didn't like it and we had to move her to a travel cot at 8 weeks as she couldn't sleep as every time she waved her hands she whacked them on the bars and woke up. would have moved er sooner but we didn't get our hands on the travel cot til then

ds on the other hand loved it.... he's still be in it but the tubby thing grew out of it at 6 months... it groaned on it's hinged when he moved around!

i'd stick with the moses basket unless you can blag a crib from someone. You can get a stand to put the moses basket on, and tbh there's not much difference from a crib.
we used ours til about 5 months when ds grew out of it but he was a very tall baby.

PinkTulips · 16/04/2007 16:54

tyhat said i never had a moses basket.... isn't a moses basket on a stan pretty much the same size as a crib? and you can move it around easily

SydneyB · 16/04/2007 17:10

Was lent a moses basket which was great for DD til about 3 months when she got too tall for it. Had a stand too so we just moved it around during the day so we could bring her down when she was small for naps etc. Then we started putting the moses basket in her cot for naps etc so she got used to being there before we moved her in. Perfect if you want them next to you at night as more or less same height as bed and easy to whisk them over. See if you can borrow one or get one 2nd hand as bit of an unecessary expense if you only use it for a couple of months or so.

Thanks for the advice. Think I will hold off and see how it goes. If I can find one for free from somewhere then great!

no, i had a bedside cot, ordered online when dd was about a week old, i had a moses basket but dd did the same as pink tulips lo and flung arms out hit sides woke up and cried...and its too hot to swaddle summer babies, i had to do everything in my power to cool her down, little sweaty thing!

if you can borrow one, it might be worth a try
