How many books does your 8 year old actualy read?

I was recently told my son's reading age is that of an 8.6 year old. All he wants for Christmas is "a thousand" chapter books. I was wondering how many chapter books realistically he would get through in a week/month/year. I couldn't find any statistics online so I don't know how many to buy. How many do your kids get through?

My kids are younger but I was reading several books a week from 8/9.
I'm not sure what he means by a thousand chapter books - he wants a thousand books with chapters in them?
I'd just start with a few series of books and maybe join a library?

Def join the library and get into a nice habit of going every few weeks to change the books or on a sat morning etc.

Does he like to re-read? My 8 year old DD does so I don’t mind buying quite a lot. What about either a few series as suggested, or the first books of lots of series (and some book tokens) to get him hooked on a variety?

I like to read the first in a series with or to DD as it really seems to encourage her. Also, she’s dyslexic and hearing the names of places and characters first really helps her.

3-5 depending on length. My kids never read them twice so we order everything from the library or it's a waste of money. Got 8 books on order currently some of which will have arrived by the time current batch is read.
My other dd reads much less, probably a long book eg harry potter every half term.

Book people have a great sale at moment eg 10 wimpy kids for £10

Your son’s reading age is 8.6 - but how old is your son?

ButterfliesAreWeird · 09/11/2017 20:44

Sounds like I should get him one a week and he can get another from the library if he finishes? He loves his books and gets so sad when we have to return them. The Diary of a wimpy kid is exactly what he means by chapter books
