8 WEEK OLD BABY - poos thick, sometimes solid - anyone else??? (sorry if TMI)

Hi

I am a childminder and started with an 8 week old baby on Thursday. After speaking with her mum, I'm after some advice about her poos as neither of us have seen anything like it with a young baby.

Normally (afaik) poos are runny and bright like mustard. This baby had a poo whilst with me and it was a darker colour, not at all mustard, and was really thick and sticky. Her mum said sometimes it's that compact, the baby can poo on a wipe!!! (she described it as being like a dog poo)

Whilst it's great that it's not messy, we're concerned if this means anything? Baby USUALLY only poos every 2/3 days and does get a lot of tummy discomfort, like she may be constipated?

Any suggestions? Or anyone else know of a baby pooing like this?

TIA

Is he breast fed, formula or a combination of the two?

Just formula, not sure which one though. Will ask her mum on Thursday. Don't think the baby ever had breast milk as poor mum nearly died at birth so too poorly to be able to feed;.

a friend's ds had that (at about 12 weeks?) - constipation due to formula. They mixed it with fennel tea, worked well. Did the Mum ask the doc? Good luck!

Dr says cooled boiled water for EVERYTHING so mum has lost confidence I think. I'll suggest that though, thanks

Here in France the formula brand we used had a special milk called "Transit" which were made to be used during periods of constipation. One bottle of that, and DD would poo in half an hour.

Isn't there anything like that in UK?

If they brew the fennel tea with boiling water (I always did anyway - I bf, so I had to drink it when I thought dd had a tummy ache or so, brrrrr), let it cool and use that to mix the formula, they should be on the safe side! Didn't express myself correctly.... Good luck again!
