Severe bum rash

Not me - 3 week old DS.

We are applying Metanium hourly and changing his nappy with the same frequency.

We have stopped using water wipes (on advice) and are using loo roll to wipe away skids and bum crumbs.

Still his wee bum is red raw: it looks unbearably painful.

As he’s a newborn I’m not really able to give him lots of nappy off time as he’s feeding constantly and I can’t get covered in poos and wees.

Can anyone provide advice as if it’s still this bad on Monday I’ll head to the GP for warp strength cream as Matanium isn’t really healing things.

When mine had it really bad the only thing that worked was a dressing, covered up the sore bits and changed as soon as he had a poo. I would go to the GP if it doesnt clear up though. I always found sudocrem the best for mine, but it wont really go on wet/ sore skin.

brrrfreeezy · 03/11/2017 22:06

I agree with scrowy - when dd1 had bleeding nappy rash, putting her to bed without a nappy was the only thing that worked - was nhs advice - they are still for longer at night. At that small though I’d get it checked by the dr.

Best thing I ever used for severe nappy rash was a prescription cream called Timodene that had to be kept in the fridge. Worked remarkably quickly. Hope he gets sorted soon.

When my daughter was born and in Nicu she was prescribed Orabase for awful nappy rash. The nurses raves about it as a better alternative to meta noun. It’s a protective paste used normally to stop stoma tubes irritating the skin and by god it works wonders! When I went back for more from GP he’d never heard of it and the chemist had to order it in specially. I’ve since found you can buy it for around a fiver from amazon.

HamSandWitches · 03/11/2017 22:23

The Johnson one worked for me after the yellon Metanium didn't on one of my DC. Metanium worked fine on the other 2

TheLegendOfBeans · 03/11/2017 22:47

Ok, so daft question; when the advice given is breast milk, how to actually apply it?

Do I jet it at the sore bits then pop a nappy on?

Do I soak cotton wool in it and wipe it on?

Do I try and decant some in a wee bowl and dip his bum in for a few mins?

OP posts:
Misty9 · 03/11/2017 23:00

I would decant (that’s the poshest description of expressing I’ve heard!) and dip his bum in it - or risk a poo covered boob! I used to use bm for ds’s regularly gunky eyes...magic stuff. And definitely lots of nappy off time. Puppy training pads are good for that apparently.

TheLegendOfBeans · 04/11/2017 12:08

I’m planning on putting it in a crystal bottle too @misty9 Grin

EvilCleverDog · 04/11/2017 12:26

Wish I had have thought of decanting - I lay ds on an inko pad and poured a bottle of expressed milk on his bum 😂

absoluteLee · 04/11/2017 12:30

Your poor ds. I hope he heals up soon! The bright yellow metanium worked wonders for my dd.

sthitch · 04/11/2017 21:32

My LO had terrible nappy rash 2 weeks ago, it was a Saturday so couldn't go to the GP but showed a picture to the pharmacist and they recommended Caniston - it cleared up within a few days (and it was really really bad, like little sores). Now we are using water and the little cotton pads/drying after - they sell them in packs of 2 sat Aldi for 70p, little bit annoying as can't use wipes any more but anything over seeing that kind of nappy rash!

Another tip is nappy off every day for as long as they will take it, I bought some sheets for her to lay on so no surprises on the floor!

sthitch · 04/11/2017 21:34

By the way, the sheets are on eBay 25 for £4.50, better than the 7 for £5 in boots!

Ropsleybunny · 04/11/2017 21:40

It’s probably thrush.

Choccablock · 04/11/2017 21:40

If it's really severe (blisters?) Get an appointment with the out of hours GP. (You can phone 111)

They can prescribe you Daktacort (the ointment and not the cream. )

ny20005 · 04/11/2017 21:46

Egg whites - leave to air dry before putting nappy back on. Works a treat x

ninnynono · 04/11/2017 21:55

Eosin. Id never heard of it but my doc prescribed it for nappy rash. We are in Switzerland though and a little more old school our methods!

It's bright red and stains but if really dries up the broken skin. We can buy it here at the pharmacy. My baby's rash had gone within a couple of days.

Also no to using wipes; only cotton pads and water then pat dry with a towel.

Hope he's better soon.

picklemepopcorn · 04/11/2017 21:55

Keep him nappy free when he is on the floor/in his cot. Use a towel over a changing mat.

When you feed him, wrap him in a towel. That will contain things enough.

TheLegendOfBeans · 04/11/2017 22:29

We’ve had a day of him getting his bum out and I must say there’s been a swift improvement!

Also somewhat bizarrely we haven’t applied metanium at all today and it seems that air + no cream + changing nappy hourly or so + saying goodbye to sainsburys nappies = bum vastly improved

OP posts:
furryelephant · 04/11/2017 22:40

Poor little thing Sad if your pharmacy has it I really recommend Cavilon cream (they do a spray too for when it’s really bad). It’s what hospitals give out when cancer treatments have made other wee bums sore and it works absolute wonders!

BamburyFuriou3 · 05/11/2017 07:45

Metanium and disposables made all 3 of mine have sore bums. Honestly weleda nappy change cream is the dogs bollocks and can be used with cloth nappies as it washed out so easily, but bums need air as well, so not every nappy change. Please do try using oil to clean rather than water as well.

picklemepopcorn · 05/11/2017 08:52

The nappy creams prevent the wick action of the disposable nappy. It’s best to use a tiny bit at the first sign of redness. It works to leave the baby nappy off but with a towel over/around for warmth and to catch leaks!

picklemepopcorn · 05/11/2017 08:53

DS1 could only have baby wipes occasionally, they made him sore. We used cotton wool and baby lotion. Oil is excellent too.

MonochromeUnicorn · 05/11/2017 09:06

If it doesn't improve I would recommend Orabase. I'm not sure if you can buy it over the counter or if you need a prescription. This is what the hospital prescribed for my newborn DS, and apparently what they use in special baby care. It forms a completely watertight barrier over the sore area and gives it chance to heal.

Kaykee · 05/11/2017 12:49

I’d avoid egg whites tbh my mum recommended for my son but he had a bloody awful reaction to them - 16 years ago now but there are loads of better things to use.
Not sure if you can buy cavilon over the counter, I’d advise plenty nappy free time and check bottom and mouth for thrush and treat both ends as that’s a major cause of bad bottoms and is v sore. With the babes I bf I found eating certain things gave them sore bottoms so stuck to non rich/spicy food for a while and bottoms cleared.

Nothing worse for a tiny baby must be so sore. Worth getting it looked at if it’s very broken down as can become infected if you can’t clean it properly as so broken. Would also second re usable nappies
Hope it’s better soon op

fatfingeredfran · 05/11/2017 13:35

The big pee the bed protection mats (dry nights?) for older kids are fab for letting a naked newborn lie on to get some nappy free time. Should absorb all newborn shit and he’d need to really try hard to pee off the mat as they are quite big.

Glad it’s improving
