My baby recently turned one and still only says ba ba ba all the time or now a bit of ba bu!! We always try to name things and encourage her but she just smiles ! Is this normal at her age?

Mine didn't really say anything till he was more like 2. Very normal.

DesignedForLife · 31/10/2017 20:16

Perfectly normal! She'll be chatting nonstop soon enough!

Very normal! She's still very young! 😊

Thanks. I just hear others say their kids say mama, dada, this and that!

Is she showing an understanding of what you are saying? Does she know where the ball is, stuff like that?

I find baby signing very useful at this age, so I know if my DC is hungry/thirsty/etc without as much guesswork.

Dalesgirl16 · 31/10/2017 22:27

I ask her where stuff is but she doesn’t really get it right. She does respond to us and if I ask her to say mama she says her usual baba!

Perhaps her hearing needs to be checked? One of my DC said "doo" for everything and he ended up having glue ear and needing speech therapy.

Dalesgirl16 · 01/11/2017 17:25

Oh no! Would there be other symptoms for glue ear? Her hearing was checked at birth

It's been ages, but I do remember he didn't always react to loud noises. Hearing difficulties caused by glue ear can come and go iirc.

Will you be having a 12 month check with the HV? Could be useful to discuss how you think she's getting on. As I recall, I think they are supposed to have around 50 words by 2 years old, so she's got ages yet to develop her language.

Both of mine only started talking when they were approaching 2. Delayed but otherwise normal it would seem. Some babies are just like that I guess. So long as your LO responds to sounds I'm sure it's too early to worry.
