Not my 3 year old but my friend's ds. He apparently does them for hours - he is a very reserved little boy and doesn't make friends easily but is really into his jigsaws. Is this that unusual/should she be encouraging him with it? Just out of interest really. She is a very high flying professional and would never get the chance to go on here so I thought I'd ask on her behalf....

dd could do 60-100 pieces at 3, she'd get loads out and do them all ! It didn't last once she discovered other diversions though. If I were her I'd be looking for similar activities such as Lego models with instructions to broaden his interests a bit, perhaps sitting with him to do them and chatting along, and encourage play potentially more sociable and imaginative.

My daughter burnt her left hand when she was 2 and 1/4 (left handed) so couldn't do much for few weeks. She got into puzzles and went from 2 pieces to 100 pieces in that space of time. She was obsessed with them for weeks.

I found the best place for cheap puzzles was charity shops.
It did stop , but she is not the type to be inside if she can help it, but she also loved lego from a young age.

jigsaws, (any level for any age) are great an encourage spatial awareness, Mine both went through phases and loved them still.
