Moving to Cambridge area – anyone know the area? We are considering Haverhill

I found an earlier thread that says ?Haverhill was developed to house the London overspill in the 1960's and it's like being in East London?

Is that a bad thing? Is it a nice area?

I live 3 miles away from Haverhill but lived in the town 3 years ago. Like most areas Haverhill has its good parts and bad. The town is extending rapidly and the amenities are growing at long last as well.

The estates in the town really vary. The 2 "known" ones are the Chalkstone and the Clement. Both of which were built for the London overspill in the 1960s and really ares that I would feel happy about living in. The are though lots of new housing estates like Meadowlands and the area near Sainsos that are really nice and affordable. Please don't feel that all Haverhill is bad, I have lived round this area for all my 28 years and when I lived there for 5 years never has considered it a bad place to be.

Sorry meant I would NOT feel happy living on the Chalkstone or Clements estates!!!

Bury is further away from Harston than Newmarket! I was just getting muddled with which one would involve a trip on the A14. I really don't think the AA are right about how long it would take - if you look at the map it wouldn't be a very direct route at all and would involve the A14 and the M11 neither of which will be pretty in rush hour.

I don't know what to say - house prices are stupidly high here. I don't know where you live now, but to give you an idea, my sister's income is less than half of ours yet her house is bigger because of where she lives (ie further north) Have you tried looking at Rightmove for houses in your price range within a certain radius?

I wouldn't trust the AA times - honest, the A120 is new, dual carriageway and fast! it only takes me 1 hour 15mins to drive from my Mums (Braintree) to West London!!! (and I don't speed)

thats just what i was going to suggest daisymoo

Yep, Rightmove, ukpropertyshop etc.

It's hard moving to an area you just don't know! I live in Highworth, near Swindon, in the SW at the mo - not on a communter belt to London!! Prices much more reasonable.

And the place that comes up time and again is Haverhill!

Am not a fan of Haverhill or Newmarket.

I live just outside of Bury ST Edmunds and love it here. I am new to Bury and have been overwhelmed with the amount of people I have met since having ds.

My dad lives Haverhill. Nice park.

Any updates on what Haverhill is like to live in now?

Ilovethekitties · 14/03/2020 07:33

Hi, I live in the area. Firstly, welcome! Secondly, Haverhill has a terrible reputation and a very high crime rate. There is a reason the houses are so much cheaper than anywhere else so close to central Cambride! I wouldn't advise it.
