Where to learn how to look after my child's skin?

Hello,

As a new Daddy to Alex of 5 weeks. I used to worked in the skincare industry for adults and I'm painfully aware of how chemical / synthetic some skincare products can be.

Personally, I've found specific skincare advice for parents and children to be thin on the ground in pre-birth classes.., understandably feeding, nappy changing, etc are more urgent priorities.

Where would people recommend going to learn how to look after my babies skin - the basics, do's / don'ts, natural remedies, tips and tricks?

Any great resources around?

Thanks,
James, Alex's Daddy

Or just avoid using anything? Water works pretty well.
Wipes later on for convenience

Advice we had was basically don't use anything

I wouldn't use anything on a 5 week old unless you need to.

Water only cleaning. Top and tail daily. Bath twice a week. I like bepanthem nappy cream.

Organic sunflower oil if you are doing baby massage.

I didn't use anything on my DD's at that age, My first DD had quite dry skin (she was born a week late) and she had quite bad cradle cap, for both of these I used extra virgin olive oil, it worked very well and was gentle on her skin.

Didn't use wipes until they were both a lot older, used cotton wool and water instead.

Oh and agree for nappy rash bepanthem cream is very good.

thanks, i'm definitely pro- minimalist on the care front, just when he's caked in mess I'd usually like to get him properly clean. He also has dry skin / eczema, and like to make bath time into a relaxing routine for him with a gentle baby massage...

I'm not in any rush to put things on Alex that we don't need to, but equally I´d love to know if anyone has any resources they recommend for learning best practice on this front?

My eldest DD has Eczema, It has died down a lot now she's older, but if she does have a flare up Oilatum is good for the bath.

For times when she doesn't have any eczema I use this.

The "resource" for this kind of stuff is your health visitor. You only need water to clean off poo.

Thanks for sharing, really helpful. As a Brit living outside the UK we don't have a health visitor... hence me asking. Sounds like one would be handy! Appreciate the pointers. Cheers!
