Wooden jigsaw puzzles, fisher price little people stuff, toddler books and building blocks were the kind of things dd got a lot of fun out of at that age.

thanks julie i will tell them those stuff might not mention the wooden jigsaw though and buy that for him myself so i dont feel guilty when i start playing with it when he's in bed

mtj books are always really good and £5-6 so not too dear. Check a recent thread on yr baby's fave book or Mumsnet recommends section...or any lift flap books, books with sparkly bits, books with fluffy bits were popular with all mine. DS2 (15mo)loves an Usborne book called Animal Hide and Seek with flaps, fluffy patches, animal noise potential and counting too. Also you cd write in the book who it was from as a memento (have started doing this, reather belatedly). DS2 otherwise likes playing with big brother's Playmobil (hmm, tiny pieces) and marble run (ditto); play food is also popular, or how about asking for bits of Brio-alike train track (available for £5-10++) and start a collection? IME a very long-lived and well played-with toy.

mtj playmobil and marble run are not serious suggestions of gifts for a 1yo BTW,just me being silly (and DS2 wanting what he shouldn't have!!)

mummytosteven · 19/07/2004 01:31

i think playmobil do a few 18 month plus things - tho all the lovely stuff is 3 years plus (grrr)
mamas and papas do some nice rocking caterpillars/rocking donkeys starting from £50 which are suitable for 9 months/1 year plus

mummytojames · 19/07/2004 10:32

thanks all i will definatly mention the books but i think the mamas and papas coletion will be a bit expensive gettting realy tempted just to a ramraid in toysrus and tell people exactly what he would like from there and if they moan i will say wwell you did ask but definatly will mention books building block and the little people stuff

little people stuff is great, dd just had 1st b'day and I asked for that and she loves it (well chewing it anyway).

Never thought I'd suggest a dvd but someone gave us 'baby einstein' one which is VERY CAREFULLY WORKED OUT for little ones. My dd is tiny but a one year old compadre loves it. Of course as well as being very entertaining it will naturally make him into a genius (should you want that).

(by the way dd also entranced, so good if you had younger siblings and it could be enjoyed by both despite their different takes on the world)

How about setting up an Amazon wish list see this They have lots of brilliant things for kids of all ages!
I have done this twice for my Dd and really pleased with the results both times.
