Summer shoes

What shoes should I buy DS (22m) for spring / summer? I'm thinking 1 pair proper shoes and 1 pair sandal type shoes. DH thinks two pair of shoes is ridiculously extravagant

Are open-toed sandals a stupid idea for a toddler? Would jelly shoes be better? Am I thinking about this just a little too much?

I like Doodles canvas shoes for my DSs.

IdreamofClooney · 12/04/2007 16:44

My DS is 22 months too - I've been eying up the start rite canvas shoes as they have ones with pirates on (sadly no tractors or neenahs though) but I suppose I would need to get a proper pair too and the canvas ones are £16 (!)

Jojo sell similar cnavas ones for £6 but they won;t be properly measured to fit (which I always feel guilted into) so I think I'll just end up getting another pair of "proper shoes" and DS will get sweaty feet all summer

Doodles for me - jelly shoes look very uncomfortable. Even those fake trekker sandals would be better - Next have some good ones. As long as they are long enough in the toe, just be prepared for whingeing if they get stones in them. Mind you, DD would prefer her wellies all year round.

I was thinking of canvas ones - but then I remembered that we live in the UK and it rains in July, and he'll probably need some proper shoes.

And when I wear plimsoll type shoes, I need to wear trainer socks, or they rub and smell.

And I wondered if buying canvas shoes would mean that he still needed proper shoes and something for when it's warm enough that I want to wear flipflops.

(Can you tell that we've had a bank holiday, and I've had far too much time off work and spent it all thinking about his shoes?!)

Call me a bad Mummy but I have been known to only buy Doodles for the summer and save getting proper shoes until the next time they need shoes.

x post florence

hmmm... stones in shoes. and i'm thinking grazed toes when he can't be bothered to keep his feet on the pedals of his trike.

maybe i should just buy shoes, and see if he actually complains about his feet being too hot...

MrsSpoon - tell me more of the benefits of just Doodles...

Cornflakegirl, IMO Doodles are great, they come in width fittings just like the other shoes in Clarkes but are a fraction of the price, you can wash them when they get grotty. The only downside is that they seem to think that older children don't need them or don't want them as they stop at around a size 13. I had to get DS1 sandals this year for the first time and he was complaining of stones in them and I am worried that he will hurt his toes as they are open. Also when it was cold and raining (we are just back from Spain where it was unusually cold and rainy) he had to wear his socks with them which IMO looks awful and his feet got far wetter than DS2's did, he was in Doodles.

MrsSpoon, I am convinced! Thank you

Ive bought dd1 some sandals and a pair of crocs and will also be getting doodles (if i can get her to take the crocs off)

Twinmummyx2 · 12/04/2007 20:41

Doodles are the best! my twins were £13 from clarks...we got the shark/fish ones for Kyran and pink ones with flower and sequins on for Cerys.....they go in the washing machine too and come in all different width fittings...fabulous!...this year they are selling sun hats to match the shoes!!!

(i do not work for clarks)

Lovecat · 12/04/2007 23:18

I tried to buy those pink ones today for dd, but they weren't available in her width, boo hiss mutter mutter - they're really pretty, aren't they?

I just resent spending £28+ on 'proper' shoes which the nursery will only then take off her and whack repeatedly onto big sharp stones all day (well, they must be doing something like that, because her shoes come back in a right state...!)

ChasingRabbits · 12/04/2007 23:21

Doodles are great, although I buy copies from Bewise, usually at £2 or £4 a pair.

izzybiz · 13/04/2007 07:28

My niece is 22 months and she has a little pair of Crocs!
She is fine with them. Am getting some for my DD

Twinmummyx2 · 13/04/2007 07:49

I agree with you lovecat..the 'proper' shoes are very expensive.....i do tend to buy one pair each for them in the winter..they don't get so wrecked in the winter! but they have wide feet so its best to.

What are crocs???

mumtwogirls · 13/04/2007 08:14

Doodles are the best. If you want to buy two pairs of shoes, why don't you buy two of these. So if one gets wet or dirty you've got the other pair handy. Doodles can be put in the washing machine and come out still looking like new.

MintChocChippyMinton · 13/04/2007 08:24

Usually get my DC a pair of decent sandals (Ecco last year, comfortable, leather lined etc) each, and that has to do them. They should have at least a thumbs width of space between the toes and the end of the shoe so their toes are quite well protected.
If their winter shoes or trainers still fit then fine, otherwise they have to wait until September for school shoes.
Agree for little ones doodles are the best solution.
