Helping Adult Children with Aspergers/Nonverbal Learning Disorder to live independently

Hi All

I'm new to Mumsnet but wondered if there were other parents out there who would like to help facilitate independent living for high functioning adult kids on the ASD?

I have a 23 year old son with NLD who holds down a really good job in IT. He tried independent living earlier this year but it didn't work out, partly because he wasn't sharing with like minded folk due to longstanding social isolation and partly because he wasn't coping with the practical stuff. He's lovely, but really fed up at being back home and we would both love him to regain the independence he's lost.

I had the thought that a group of parents could work together to help set up a shared household for adult kids of similar ages and with common interests. It could be set up to include features that helped bonding such as music/ board games room and tech room for hanging out together

The household could also build in some support - for instance find a coach to facilitate conversations with the whole group about deepening friendships, dating or whatever issues people wanted to explore together. Some help with cooking and cleaning could be another possibility.

It would be great to hear what people think of this? BTW we're in London.

Thanks for that Dizzy, have reposted in SN Chat. Good luck, it seems there's so much more understanding now than there was 20 years ago, it can only help improve opportunities and resources.
