AIBU to think that children walking barefoot is disgusting?

I saw a post of a closed group on F/B and was repulsed but am getting a lot of vitriol for saying that a woman who lets her dd walk around in public spaces sans footwear, besides being idiotically unhygienic, seems to be giving off the illusion that her family is so impoverished that they cannot afford shoes.

Apparently utilization of "homeopathy" is sufficient to keep her offspring healthy and immune to germs and bacteria.

"Wow apparently this needs to be added - yes she is barefoot! No I don't care if you don't think she should be! Yes I would have been too if the sign hadn't said I had to wear them to enter the store. Yes I am aware of the germs on the floor. Yes I also let her go barefoot in some of the poorest areas of northern Mexico and I walked right next to her barefoot as well! So did my husband and my other 2 kids. We even walked around in stores barefoot there. Yes we are healthy, no we don't have parasites because of this. I am trained in homeopathic health care, we take everything we need daily to prevent parasites and have never had them when tested. No I don't need your opinion on my decision to avoid shoes and yes we will all continue to go barefoot every chance we get!! Send me a pm and I will delete it. Tell me off and I will ignore you. This is a crochet page not a judge my parenting page."

Are you ok OP?

I have been dwelling on this thread now. Most of the world don't wear shoes I would assume?

gandalf456 · 05/10/2017 11:11

Yes, me, too. It's a normal thing to do. Barefoot is not the norm unless you are on a beach or by the pool. Anyway, the ground feels horrible against one's skin.

Worry about yourself, if this is really impacting your life you live a charmed life

Depends on the context. In the back garden, around the house? Fine. In a crowded place like a supermarket where their feet could get stood on? Stupid.

Jiggler · 05/10/2017 13:14

Plus I must admit that adults who walk barefoot down the street in the summer time do irritate me. It's all a bit 'look at me, I am a free spirit unshackled from society's expectations'.

TheQueenSnortsAvocados · 06/10/2017 22:42

@MiaowTheCat

TheQueenhave you never seen it when a crochet FB group flips out?!

I have. (Remember SheepShit??) This is why I must know which groups the OP is a member of!!

Callmecordelia · 07/10/2017 05:56

That was crazy. I'm getting nostalgic now, I'm not really in any FB crafting groups at all any more.

ferrier · 07/10/2017 06:13

My physio told me to go barefoot as much as possible.
(The adverts are usually thread related).

TheKrakening3 · 07/10/2017 06:39

In my northern Australian childhood, hardly anyone at government schools wore shoes until high school. My classmates ranged from working class kids to upper middle-class children of professionals. The school kept a box of spare sneakers for school photo day. You probably would have had conniptions.

Pluckedpencil · 07/10/2017 06:42

Ok OP. little lesson on facebook. Don't negatively comment on anything in a group situation, closed or open. a) because who gives a shit b) because you won't change anyone's opinion c) because everyone in the world can see your negative thoughts d) because that's why mumsnet have a squillion posters. Stick to anonymous internet fourms seriously. I find crochet groups, breatfeeding groups, cloth nappy groups etc etc THE WORST for this shit. Seriously, just keep out of it.
Here endeth the sermon Wink

Walking on dirty, bacteria-laden ground with bare feet is no more unhygienic than walking on the same ground with shoes on, so long as you are no more likely to lick your feet than you are to lick your shoes.

If you have walked somewhere dirty with bare feet your feet will be dirty. Then after being washed thoroughly they will be clean. The dirt doesn't have any greater power to travel up from the feet to other parts of the body than dirt on shoes would, or the power to penetrate the skin (assuming no cuts). Nor does the dirt have the power to contaminate the sink in which it is washed off.

I think the op has a slightly odd attitude to dirt and could benefit from some therapy.

MarthaArthur · 08/10/2017 21:19

Isnt this exactly why Toms shoes were created? For disadvantaged kids in 3rd world countries who were getting severe injuries and sickness from not wearing shoes?

Madreputa · 08/10/2017 21:26

The advantages and disadvantages of being barefoot in public places. Somehow I cannot imagine male beings posting and discussing irrelevant shit like this on a forum. Ah, the female of the species...

user1483644229 · 08/10/2017 21:39

How do you know if the posters are mame or female here Madre? A bit of an assumption don't you think?

user1483644229 · 08/10/2017 21:40

*male

LaughingElliot · 08/10/2017 21:44

This is really funny. Not in UK but not depths of Nepal either and all kids at local schools go barefoot. Not a problem.
