How did you ditch the dummy?

DD is 2.2 I'm thinking it's time i need to start thinking about ditching the dummy. She isn't obsessed with it, only has it when she is tired/ill/bedtime but think it's probably best I should do it sooner rather than later. She isn't a great sleeper either so I'm concerned how it will effect that too Sad.
A couple of people have told me that they bought a book about getting rid of the dummy then read it a few times with their child & then the dummy fairy came & took all the dummies away & left a pressie in return. This sounds a good idea. I'm just literally dreading it though.

How did everyone go about getting rid of the dummy? Was it as bad as you thought? Did it take them a long time to forget about dummy?

DS was the same age, also just used it to go to sleep and in the car. We just stopped producing a dummy. There were two waily bedtimes and two or three screamy car journeys. Two months on now.

We left ours out on Christmas Eve for the baby reindeer. Father Christmas left a letter saying thank you and what a big girl she was now etc. Worked like a dream!

Not how I'd advocate- nursery accident splitting lip and unable to suck it. We made a big deal of sending it away and bought a present to say well done. Soon got past it but needed cuddly bedtimes for a few weeks - meaning staying until nearly asleep. I do always cuddle anyway!

Good going Villian. Didn't sound like it was too painful for you.

Yes someone else mentioned about leaving it out for Father Christmas. That could be an idea.

Polka I have sit by DD until she is asleep every night & she wakes a few times in the night also so I think I could be in for a rough ride with it.

Yes we left it on the plate for Santa to take for the babies with the mince pie and carrot!

The next year when we went on a trip to see Santa he asked him if the babies liked her dummies. I was nodding over his shoulder and Santa played along dutifully.

Watching with interest. DD is 2.11 and obsessed. We've managed to cut them down to night time only, using bribery. We have a dummy fairy book and she loves reading it and talking about it but shows no interest in actually giving them up. Despite being promised a pink bike. We managed to get her to sleep once without them recently when she was VERY tired (as a kind of experiment) but at 2am she appeared in our room absolutely bawling for it. Recent efforts to cut down the number in her bed to just 1 or 2 has resulted in broken nights for us all as she wakes up fully when she can't find one and comes into our room.
Unfortunately there's nothing she likes as much as her dummies so I don't know how to encourage her any more to give them up. Maybe it needs to wait until she is a bit more toy-focused...
good luck anyway! The book we have is "Bea gives up her dummy" and it is very nice.
