Sweaty baby

Maybe it's my anxiety starting to spike in anticipation of DC2 appearing in the next three weeks but tonight I had the fright of my life as I thought DD (19mo) wasn't breathing after a checking on her after an hour of her being upstairs without a peep / totally normal as she is an excellent sleeper.

What's done for my nerves this time is she was SO SO SWEATY. She's always been prone to a sweaty head and the finest of temperature changes and we have her in a 2.5 tog grobag and a thin sleepsuit with the room hovering around 19 degrees.

She is also an incredibly deep sleeper; the scare I had tonight was she didn't rouse when I stroked her (at all), I couldn't hear or feel her breathe and she felt cold from the sweat that was drying on her head.

After yelling for DH and whisking her out the cot she was fine and let us have it both barrels for waking her but I suppose I'm asking do any of you have babies that sweat excessively from the head even when the weather isn't warm, the heating isn't on and the ambient temperature of the room is as it should be (18/19 degrees)?

Plus I'm blatantly cruising for a handhold as that was actually terrifying.

That would scare me too the breathing especially.

My DD is always super hot and always sweaty when in bed. She has never had a sleeping bag and kicks her covers off most of the time. She is 18 months too.

Chuffingchuff · 28/09/2017 21:43

I hate it when they scare you like that! I hope your ok! 2 very sweaty children here. DS (4) is a very sweaty child and his hair will be soaked every night. DD(1) is also quite sweaty and won't sleep with a grow bag. She likes a blanket that she usually kicks off and sleeps comfortably with just her pyjamas on her Confused

Both my DC were super sweaty babies and toddlers - especially their heads. Even in the middle of winter when it was freezing. Older DC has mostly grown out of it now at 6.

It really was heart-stopping. The fact she'd been sweating so profusely and the coldness really upset me.

Having just looked at the thermometer in her room it seems we are having a warm night of it here in tropical SW London.

Needless to say what with being 37w pregnant and up weeing five times in the night I'll be watching her like a hawk.

I clicked on this thread as this keeps happening with my dd2, also 19 months! I was interested to see what other's experiences were. Tonight I went upstairs to check her (something I can't seem to stop doing) and was met with what you describe (not for the first time!). She doesn't sleep in a bag and it's definitely not too warm in her room. Her hair was so wet! I didn't have any of this with dd1, the only difference between them, which will sound weird, is that dd1 was born with lots of hair and it continued to grow and grow. Dd2, bless her, was born with wisps of hair and it hasn't grown a great deal. By the time dd1 was 19 months she had so much hair we had to put hair bands in but with dd2 we have only a few cm's. I completely get the panic, I was always checking dd1 for no good reason and I thought I'd be more chilled with dd2 but it's worse! I know it's hard but try to relax, it seems looking at this it's not uncommon! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

It's pretty warm in my house tonight. When you say sleepsuit, do you mean bodysuit, or is she in something with legs? She should just be in a bodysuit really.

Do you think she really wasn't breathing?

She was so deeply asleep it's like I happened upon her when she was sleeping at her deepest - so she's not "stopped breathing" but I couldn't detect a breath IYSWIM?

She's got such fine, wispy hair, it's only just coming in. When I say sleepsuit I mean an all in one with feet and poppers up the front. No vest underneath though, hell no.

Not a doctor here, so.. but sweaty head can be associated with low levels of vitamin D. So you could ask your GP about that if you are concerned.

Dreams16 · 29/09/2017 07:06

It could be the feet being covered up in the bodysuit is too much
My DS is a sweaty baby as well he's only coming up to 6 months but if he goes in the 2.5 tog I'll only put him in a long sleeve vest so that he doesn't over heat

If you look on the grobag website it's pretty good in what it tells you to stick on baby using what tog sleeping bag on the temp of the room I fully understand the panic I'm always like it I've been known to wake up and if son is too warm take the sleeping bag off and constantly checking on him I think it's a panic that non of us mums ever get over the need to check on our little ones
All the best op for when your newest little one arrives and I hope your DD won't give you any more scares

goes to chemist and buys Vit D drops immediately

Thanks to everyone who commented on this thread. She went on to have a lovely sleep, meanwhile I was up with sore guts and fretting! Confused

Really feel for you OP that must have been terrifying I felt sick reading that. My DD goes to bed with a Snuzza alarm and there's still been a couple of gut wrenching moments where I've whipped her out her cot it's the worst feeling ever especially when they're cold to touch. I don't have any advice for you but interested in the vitamin D thing. DD1 is almost 6 and always been sweaty in bed but this past week she's been drenched to the point where I thought she'd actually rinsed her hair under the tap.

SuzukiLi · 29/09/2017 11:57

Yep, the suckling pig that I birthed is now 3 and soaks through a pillow every night.

weeblueberry · 29/09/2017 15:21

I do think some kids run hotter than others. In a 19 degree room both of mine would be sweltering in a 2.5 tog bag. In fact it would wake my younger daughter up until we caught on and put her in a 1 tog bag.

TheLegendOfBeans · 29/09/2017 16:19

Totally noted; the 1 tog sleeping bags are back again.

I am however posting from my 87th trip to the loo today as I have a tummy bug. Wonder if DD's sweat fest was her successfully fighting it off? Hm.

It should just be a leg-less bodysuit in a 2.5 grobag at 18 to 20 degrees.
