When did your dc start to walk decent distances?

Just wondering really... ds is not quite two and although he's a sturdy little walker, he is (of course) fascinated by everything and anything and not easily steered or encouraged along once he sees something interesting (like a daisy or a dandelion, and my god we have a lot of those!). I obviously don't expect him to be undertaking ten mile yomps any time soon and I'm happy enough putting him in the sling for now (all 15 flipping kg of him, he's always been a big lad), but just wondering when I might hope to start making some progress...

They're still shit and they're 7&5. They can run around all day/ play soccer or swim for hours but try and make them walk 1km and the whinging is insane.

From my (limited) experience it's a slow process. My 3 year old is getting better at walking, but still wants to walk on every wall we see, jump off every step, run down every ramp, stop to smell flowers, etc. the walking bit in between every distraction gets faster though.

About 3 for mine.

3 1/2 has been the average for mine. One is lazier than the other.

Walking the school run was great training

Ohhh nooooo Cantsee don't tell me that! Grin

I do love watching him potter, but the trouble is that while he's pottering, ddog gets up to mischief, or I turn around to control ddog and ds does something equally mischievous. They are in league against me, I tell ya. And I am kind of hoping that we'll be able to walk to playgroup etc at some point (it's about a mile across the fields to get into the village).

So, at least another year of humping the wee boy about then? [Books self in for weight training]

It varies so wildly, and depends a lot on birth order & what you're up to in life. Some people will be putting the buggy away entirely at 2 and judging the rest of us.

If I walk our whole school run it's 4 miles a day. DS wasn't doing it reliably both ways by the time he started school. However he was under his own steam with a mix of walking, scooter or balance bike, for a decent chunk of it, well before his 3rd birthday. I probably could have made him do the whole thing but frankly it took up enough of our lives as it was. For us, carrying scooters and balance bikes was a long phase as he liked to hop on and off.

Enjoy your time with him, it's gone too soon. You won't look back and wish you'd spent more time making him walk and chivvying him.

Mines 2.5 and I've just noticed that the amount she can walk for has dramatically increased. We were out with her 5 year old friend at the weekend and she kept up with him no problems.

3.2yo DD walks just under half a mile to nursery most days (and back later) but still with the occasional ‘I’m tired’.
Although she managed 1.5miles without too much fuss when we were out at a country park a few days ago, and back again (with ice cream!). Depends how exciting it is for them I think

I know singing, he's growing up so fast! We went National Trusting yesterday and I reckon he must have covered a good mile and half over the course of the day (I did 4!). I was very proud of him, even if many of the miles I racked up were from chasing him as he made a beeline for deep water / flower beds / etc Grin I do love pottering around with him, there's just an increasing conflict between that and walking ddog in under three hours...

We're getting him a balance bike for Christmas so hopefully that will help up our mileage a little! And I just need to learn to slow down and enjoy the ride Smile
