What's your 4 year olds favourite toys?

DS is 4 a few weeks after Christmas, but I am due with DC2 just before his birthday so I'm trying to be organised ahead of time with Christmas and birthday...

And with his birthday being early in the year we try to buy toys for Christmas and birthday that he'll grow into and will last him the year, but this year I have no idea what that might be!

At the moment he loves duplo, train set and cars/racing track but he had absolutely loads of all of them from last year and really doesn't need anymore.

So looking for ideas of games, toys, books etc that 4 year olds love, so we have ideas and I pass ideas to wider family...! Help! TIA.

I have a 3 and 4 year old. The imaginext pirate shark ship is the absolute favourite

Elc castle

Any type of cars / bin lorries etc

Dressing up clothes - police, firefighter nurse etc (Melissa and Doug have a lovely paediatric nurse that is just an overcoat with teddies on)
Art and craft stuff - stencils stickers

Tap tap art - Amazon

I heard a marble run is great for that age.

My son started playing with KAPLA when he was 4 and now at 14 he is still playing with them. it.pinterest.com/knutselkoning/kapla/ of course the basic towers at 4 are a lot easier.
Buy the 200 piece box to start with, you won't regret it.

Kinetic sand is a hit for my dd1, also 4. Also figures they can role play with.

Lego and playmobil. The Lego juniors range is a good bridge between duplo and ordinary Lego, it's normal Lego bricks but much simpler to build.

Thanks for some ideas, will check them out...

My DS was 4 in April. His favourite toys are Playmobil and Lego.

Playmobil school bus and police helicopter, and he has a campervan at his grandparents' house. For Lego we bought a couple of job lots at an NCT sale so we have lots of random bricks and then I printed some simple instructions from the internet. We have also been given some simple-ish vehicles to build, which is now beginning to be possible for him.

He also loves Transformers but the smaller toys are not robust enough yet. The Optimus Prime he was given for his birthday by a friend (a 3-step one that is about £25) has survived well though because it's quite big and chunky.

He also loves craft stuff and we made a craft box for the summer holidays. Things like rolls of white paper, sticky tape, colourful feathers and sequins, PVA glue and paints so that he can turn egg cartons into 'trains' etc.

At preschool and now Reception he plays a lot with magna tiles.

My dd has just turned 5. Her favourite toys are:

  • toy kitchen with food, pans etc
  • anything Paw Patrol
  • drawing, writing and colouring
  • Lego (the basic stuff though rather than the sets)
  • her babies and her pushchairs
  • the tablet (she likes to watch those toy reviews and those unboxing videos on kids' YouTube)
  • anything small and fiddly like threading beads onto elasticated string to make bracelets

When my DD was 4 she loved play doh and teddies. I kept trying to get her into other toys but these are the ones she went back to everytime.

Marble run is a brilliant toy. Galt toys do various sized sets.

talulahbeige · 29/09/2017 22:02

My DS is a year ahead of yours and loves:

  • Lego
  • imaginext superhero stuff (obsessed with Batman)
  • play doh
  • art and colouring stuff
  • his bike, bought when he was 4.5
  • jigsaws
  • dressing up costumes
  • simple board/card games
  • books/stickers
  • also we usually ask for clothes, shoe/Clarks vouchers
thepatchworkcat · 30/09/2017 18:53

Ooh yeah agree with pp saying marble run!

soupmaker · 30/09/2017 19:00

Playmobil, Lego, play doh, paper and felt tips, anything which her 9 year old sister plays with! Orchard games are a hit in this house.
