Do you still read to your older children? If so, what age are they or if not what age did you stop? Thanks

Always to my 8 year old. Can't imagine either of us not wanting to, but I'm sure it'll happen!

Theromanempire · 25/09/2017 21:38

What do you class as older?

I read to my 8 year old most nights before bed (usually 1-2 chapters of a Roald Dahl book/adventure type book). He is capable of reading himself and often has another book on the go in his own bed aswell as his school reading book.

DS1 - not sure when I stopped. Probably earlier than 8 years old but only because he just wasn't bothered about stories/books etc. He just wanted to read factual stuff such as football magazines/annuals/encyclopedia etc.

I'll carry on till DS2 wants me to stop Smile

11yo DD has a bedtime reading aloud session with me. We're currently on the second book of the Dark Materials trilogy.
And her brother listened through the open bedroom doors regularly until he left for University.

My oldest two are 14 this week and 11 and although not every night now I still read out loud to them and they sometimes read out loud so me and their siblings. We enjoy sharing a book as a family.
Ds1 (11) is a reluctant reader so it has kind of stemmed from that but they love snuggling up on the couch in an evening and listening to a chapter of whatever we are reading.

misscph1973 · 25/09/2017 21:43

Yes! They are 10 and 12. Not every night, just when we feel like it.

subsy1a · 25/09/2017 21:48

Even when my boys were in their teens, I read to them and they would often read further books in a series after I read them the first one. They also read excerpts from books to me leading me to read books that I might not have found on my own. Please don't stop until your children want you to!

JigglyTuff · 25/09/2017 22:02

I do - DS is 10. As subsy1a says, I'll carry on doing it until he wants me to stop :)

PurplePillowCase · 25/09/2017 22:07

10yo, yes every night.
I will stop when they smell too much we both want to.

Dalphidol · 25/09/2017 22:07

My 10yo stopped wanting me to read to him years ago Sad He really isn't into books unless it's flicking through factual ones now. 5 yo still loves books so hoping I'll get one reader out of them as I love reading myself.

ElizabethShaw · 25/09/2017 22:09

My 7 year old has decided that now he can read to himself he doesn't want me to!

missmapp · 25/09/2017 22:12

Still read to ds2_(10) every night. We Still read to Ds1(12) but not every night. We often share a story on aweekend or when he is particularly enjoying a book and wants to share it. Still live reading to them both but the books are no longer of my choosing ( maze runner was a low point )

Beamur · 25/09/2017 22:13

Very occasionally read to 10yr old. I tend to read stuff she's massively too old for and it's silly and fun. DH reads more challenging books.

funshine17 · 26/09/2017 06:26

Thanks all - good to know that other still read to their older kids.....mine are 10 and 11 and I'll continue until they tell me to stop 👍

Yes, absolutely if the child wants you too. I'd carry on as long as everyone is enjoying it. I was so gutted when the 7yr old I used to babysit decided she was big enough to read to herself and stopped wanting anyone to read to her Sad My friend read the Harry Potter books to her 9 and 11 yr olds, even though they were perfectly capable of reading it themselves. They just enjoyed the family activity.
