My tiny baby is now 6 months and has developed thunder thighs , I always used ME airflow wraps with ds, but they are causing nasty red marks on dd. I have tried the next setting, but then we get leaks, I cant afford to buy lots of other wraps to try, has anyone had the same experience and found a wrap they could recommend please ?

Very interesting to read this as we're having the same problem. We haven't found a solution as yet except use more disposables . We can't afford to try loads of different ones either.

I switched to fleece which was a bit more forgiving

PinkTulips · 06/04/2007 23:11

i use a wool wrap now for the same reason

I would agree with the fleece or wool wraps.

bensmum4 · 07/04/2007 09:06

Thankyou, which wool or fleece wraps do you use ? I used a red wrap by tots bots for ds, but found he was always soaked through by morning.

i found the lovebums fleece cuffed wraps were excellant. dd3 suffered this.

snugglebumnappies · 07/04/2007 10:17

Baby BeeHinds do a very easy to care for wool wrap and I like the wolly wraps also.

octo · 07/04/2007 10:25

I have had chunky boys and never had a problem with ME wraps - if you put them on too loose and they move around this could cause rubbing. Try rinsing them out a few times and if still causing probs would go with the others and say fleece wraps. Velcro may not be the answer though as you may have to give more room round the tummy to make the legs bigger - of you see what I mean - and then could get leaks round the tummy or god forbid up the back!!!

Oxygen · 07/04/2007 11:34

I use bumsnugglers fleece wraps. I love woollywraps too, but they are pricey (although you don't need many) so thought they would probably be ruled out.

nappyzone · 08/04/2007 10:29

i use a me airflow on my v chunky boy or a tots bots but yesterday he had popper marks on him from the ME! poor little mite. so heres a question - how do fleecey ones work as obv ME ones have that feel of waterproofness inside - do fleecey ones do that too or is fleec magic? i know i should know this but wraps and fleece arent my thing (YET!!!) lol!

misdee · 08/04/2007 10:40

i didnt get on with full fleece wraps. i prefer love bums as they have the plastic cover like ME but use fleece for the cuffs so now read marks.

kittypants · 08/04/2007 10:43

disana wool wraps(more like pul up pants)are virtually leak proof!if lanolised properly.i use fleece also and tried a couple types of wool but im a big disana fan now!

snugglebumnappies · 08/04/2007 13:55

nappyzone, fleece and wool wraps work by helping the wetness vapourise so the napy can be soaking but the wrap and clothes remain dry as long as the clothing is not too tight as this will prevent the evaporation occuring!

rabster · 08/04/2007 18:00

I am following this thread with interest, as I have the same problem with the red marks. I am so gutted, as I was really getting on with real nappies.

So, what causes it - is it that they are too tight or too loose? They always seem quite loose around the thighs, but they are the same all round not just at the backs.

I would be interested in a different PUL wrap that works, as I don't really trust fleece to keep his clothes, bouncy chair, car seat etc dry!

flibbertyjibbet · 08/04/2007 18:16

I use airflow on toddler and baby and leave them on a looser setting other wise toddler pulls at them and we get red marks. I used to think that it was the covers when we got leaks, then read (I think it was the nappy lady website) that the covers are not there to make a moisture proof seal round the baby, its the nappy that should keep the moisture in, and that if you have leaks then the nappy is too wet. That does seem to be true for our two. Fleece and wool are great at night but rubbish for boys in the day as no matter how baggy trousers are, the moisture seeps through the whole of the cover as soon as the nappy is damp if the child is sitting. Perhaps you need to move up to the next size nappy or boost yours, I am not suggesting for one minute that you don't change your baby often enough !!! But our 2nd baby was a much heavier wetter than the first so we had to change more often and boost more too. Hope this helps.

bensmum4 · 08/04/2007 19:50

That would make sense with my experience of the red wrap leaking, it was only where the pressure was after a full nights sleep. The lovebums sound good, off to have a look now.

bensmum, I've got a wrap with fleece cuffs (that misdee gave me, incidentally!) which ds has grown out of and you are welcome to have - I can't check the size just now as it is in ds's bedroom but will have a look tomorrow.

Thank you v. much for the whale wrap you sent me btw - it has been a godsend!

octo · 08/04/2007 21:34

flibbertyjibbet - I think the nappy is there to absorb the wee rather than keep it in??? Once the nappy is saturated then obviously it should be changed - if not before depending on how heavy a wetter you have - if the nappy and wrap are sodden then the binding can get wet which can lead to leaks. Not sure if that makes any sense!

octo · 08/04/2007 21:36

That would apply to waterproof pul wraps btw - I think you need a pretty absorbent nappy like a tots to use fleece or wool - I'm not a fan of the damp feeling!

bensmum4 · 08/04/2007 22:18

Thankyou miaou, I think dd is nearly 15lbs now, so would probably need a medium in most makes.Glad the wrap is useful.

Hi Bensmum I have read of a few people having the same problem with airflows. I think that some babies are sensitive to the bindings around the leg.
As Octo said you could be having trouble with a detergent build-up on the bindings, so it is worth perhaps putting them through a wash cycle with no detergent to see if that clears the problem
Other wraps you could try with different bindings are bummis super whisper (was cotton bottoms), Poochies (if you can find them) Lovebums (very popular as you can see) or wool.
I haven't tried a completely fleece wrap, but I did notice Nature Babies had a cute one on their website. Bummis do a wrap called a polar bummi, which is covered in really soft fleece, but has a PUL (waterproof layer) which might be quite soft on the legs.
You could have a look on my nappy blog - there are loads of wraps reviewed on there, perhaps you might see something helpful.
I used wool on my ds during the day, he was a heavy wetter and the wool helped to increase the length of time the nappy would last, great for shopping. As long as the wrap is lanolised.
I used to use bumpy wool wraps during the day and loved them - very slim fitting and easy to use.
I hope you find a solution.

bensmum4 · 09/04/2007 20:56

Thankyou maisiemog, will have a look.

flibbertyjibbet · 10/04/2007 21:20

Octo, thats what I meant - the nappy absorbs the wee thus keeping it inside the wrap. The wrap makes a waterproof layer between clothes and nappy so that clothes stay dry. When the nappy is too wet the moisture gets squashed out and leaks out round the wrap legs (and waist if baby lying down).

chocolatechipmonkey · 10/04/2007 22:38

I find my new wacky wrap fabulous and no red marks so far! They look brilliant as well!

MrsDoolittle · 10/04/2007 22:43

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread but wraps are not meant for containment.
You shouldn't be tightening a wrap to prevent leaks, you're nappy should do that! The wrap is only to provide a waterproof layer and the popper are to keep it in place.
Can I suggest that you do not have adequate absorbancy in your nappies?
You haven't said what nappy you are using.
