pooing in knickers - argh!!! It stinks!

My little girl has finally mastered the art of weeing in toilet/potty. She was a bit of a late starter but now aged 3.3 she's cracked in (in last 3wks).

However, she poos in her knickers all the time! It drives me mad, am sick of cleaning out pooey knickers and it really stinks and knocks me sick doing it. She has occasionally done a 'big poo' in the potty or toilet but mostly she has 'heavy skid marks' (?!? lol - sorry, hope noones eating) in her knickers.

Anyone else has this and do I just have to hope she'll crack this too in the next few weeks.

p.s - i have MAJOR toilet issues with No 2's and don't want to keep nagging her or going on about it to her cos am scared she'll end up like me.

What do you think?

i think go to asda and buy a big pack on knickers.

throw them in the bin when they are dirty... if you aork it out the cost per paid of cheap knickers is not much more than the cost of a size 6 nappy anyway, so dont feel too bad about it!

TooTicky · 05/04/2007 22:37

My ds2 did this. Let her see the pooey knickers, watch you dealing with it, talk about it - it may help.

It is hard, isn't it? My ds (3.4) is doing this, sometimes 6 or 7 pooey pants a day. It's regression as he was fine until his brother was born in December! I did buy some cheap ones from asda & throw them for a while, it not only made it easier, I got less cross with him cos I wasn't having to bother with them. Sounds like your dd is just not managing to get there in time, it is possible to take her to the toilet more regularly after a meal say as that's when she's likely to do one? And praise up the successes massively, that will really egg her on. We started using a sticker chart, he got 2 stickers for a poo and it has got better. I'd say if you've got issues try really hard to just completely ignore the pooey pants & just praise the ones in the toilet/potty & get other people to praise her too. It is absolutely disgusting I know, it really does my head in esp when I'm feeding ds2 and I can't do anything but watch & know I've got more pants to clean up!

At 3.3 could you not make her throw them away?

Xenabelle, I know where you are coming from...we have major issues with my ms, who is 4y5m....he has been dry for wee since 3 1/2 or so...but he has constipation issues, which meant he would have a lot of overflow....if I had been thrwoing all the pants out, lol...it would have become expensive fun by now, sigh!
Before Pottytraining, did your dd have regular poos and is it the holding back on them that creates the skidmarks (i.e. an overflow of sorts?)!
Did she used to hide away when pooing and/ or stand in a corner for a poo...that seemed my ds's major issue, that he is used to standing up when having a poo...!
Have you tried a star chart? It did help us a lil bit, and ds is slowly but surely getting there.
Invest in single use gloves or a pair of marigold, to help you dealing with the pants, if you decide not to throw out...the way I do it is soak ina bowl wiht washing poeder, then , once soaked I trie to remove all the poo residue and then I put the pants into a bowl wiht a savlon/water solution, until they get boiled washed...that way seems to work the best and that way they don't seem to start ot smell!

Pruni, wish special pants worked for us, we had spiderman, bob the builder etc, he'll poo on anything!
What can you do about constipation probs? My ds seems def. holds himself in, crosses his legs etc, then tiny little bits come out every, ooh, half an hour or so on a bad day

annieapple7 · 07/04/2007 23:07

Empathy...my DS2 (3.1) does this, disappears and goes red in face despite my saying Do you need a poo? Go on the loo...etc
He sometimes gets constipated so he thinks it will hurt but I give him lactulose to prevent this. But he must be hanging on because when he finally does go on the loo, sorry if TMI, but it is massive! [nauseous emoticon]
Tried praise, rewards, punishment (no TV) nothing works.
It is grim.
Also have 10 week old and 5 yo.

cedar12 · 08/04/2007 07:57

My dd did this. If it smells really bad sounds like hes constipated. Increased fluids and fruit and veg as much as possible. Chocolate makes my dd constipated.
Dont nag just make light of it. Shes a lot better now but still have the odd pooey pants. When my dd hadent been for a while but obviousley needed to go my mum just said to her come on go and do a poo then we can go to the park, and she did.
When he starts going regularley hopefully the holding on should stop. I did use lactolose for a short time just to get her going again. But its better only to use it for a week or 2 as you dont want them to only go when you give them this. As much extra fruit and veg as possible and loads to drink. Nothing to bulkey like bran etc as it could make the problem worse if he is all ready constipated, weetabix or porriage are good.
Good luck

3easterbunniesandnomore · 08/04/2007 17:51

accessorizewithbabysick , if the constipation has been a long term problem, then fruit/veg and fluid increase may not be all that is needed...since my ds is on Movicol it defiantely improved things big time.
And, like your lil one, my ds will poo into any pants...don't make no difference, sigh!

accessorizewithbabysick · 08/04/2007 22:17

I do try to give him lots of fruit & veg, but he won't always eat it like most children! He also won't drink much some days despite my urging. I haven't tried lactulose, it tastes disgusting so I'd be amazed if he'd drink it but I'll try. It has been going on for a while, I'll give the hv a ring this week I think.

3easterbunniesandnomore · 08/04/2007 22:58

awbs...when I went to GP he said in our case Lactulose would not help anyway...which is why we got Movicol.
I had tried that fig syrup stuff you cna buy over the counter...but well, that didn't help much, lol, indeed it didn't do anything at all!
I really would advice you to see your GP about it and they will perscribe you the right stuff.
I w3as quite amazed by how willing my ms is with drinking the movicol, might aswell that he needs it, as ys tried it by accident the otehr day and went just "yuck" and trned his nose at it, lol!
Lactulose is disgustingly sweet, I agree, but personally I found fibergel even mroe disgusting, the gelly consitency really made me want to be sick...just talking personal experience here!

3easterbunniesandnomore · 08/04/2007 22:59

also, would your lil one drink Juices, if so...get a juicer and getr juicing, brilliant stuff...although my Kids aren't very adventurous, only orangejuice and applejuice will pass their lips, sigh...!

accessorizewithbabysick · 09/04/2007 09:11

I had to have a lot of lactulose with both births, I never want to touch it again quite frankly! Trouble with ds1 is, once he gets constipated he won't eat anything really nor drink much so it goes on for days with hard little bits coming out all the time. Must hurt for him too. He'll eat plenty of fruit on its own, harder to get veg into him tho.
Going back to the original, xena how are you getting on?

3andnomore · 09/04/2007 19:29

awbs...then lactoluse would probably NOT help your child...sounds much like my son, and absically it means that they are really blocked up and this can actually cause the intestine to form "pockets" etc....
Take to the GP, I really mean it....get it sorted , ohterwise it will only get worse...
saying that, even with teh med we still have our nightmares...right now, after a good phase we have had the last few days several accidents...and I am just soooooooo fed up!If I don't ever have to touch a poo stained pair of pants in my life it wouldn't be a day to soon, sigh...
And yes, Xena, how are you getting on!

accessorizewithbabysick · 09/04/2007 21:46

I suspect you're right 3, I've put it off long enough. I will email my dad first tho about it as he is a pediatrician. Quite handy to have around. Thanks!

3andnomore · 10/04/2007 08:57

well, that is indeed great stuff...am sure he will be able to help you then

cedar12 · 10/04/2007 11:51

Movicol is good stuff to get rid of the blockage. I havent given to my dd but I am I nurse and I dont think it tastes to bad and you could add squash.
My dd isnt always great with fruit and veg but I hide it in loads of stuff. Home made soup is good for hiding load of veggies in also mash it in to potato or hide fruit in milk shakes.
It such a stressful problem isnt it, but it does get better my dd is almost 4 and is loads better now. Good luck
