Breast feeding after 6 weeks?!

I gave birth to twin boys six weeks ago, initially I breast fed for the first two weeks but I could not produce enough milk to satisfy both babies and struggled to keep up with their feeding demands due to becoming exhausted. My Partner and I were then topping up each twins feed with formula as instructed by health professionals. After 2/3 weeks I gave up on breast feeding and started to completely formula feed.

Since transferring to formula completely, it is apparent that my youngest twin (by one minute) has a cows milk allergy. His symptoms come include eczema, hives / rash, poorly tummy and reflux. The GP has prescribed a special formula which has made some improvement but my baby is still suffering and in so much pain. I can't even comfort him at all times as I have to split my attention between him and his twin brother.

I feel so guilty because this pain could have been avoided if I continued to breast feed.

I was wondering if I could restart breast feeding at six weeks post partum? Or would my milk have dried up? I would appreciate any advice or tips on this subject. Thank you

I'm no expert, but why don't you give it a go? See if he will latch on and if so, if he stimulates your supply. I guess it would take a little while (and a fair few night feeds) to get going and a breastfeeding specialist (nct, la leche or a trawl through kellymom website) could help.

And stop beating yourself up about stopping after a few weeks. I can't imagine how hard it is to have twins - it was so difficult to cope with one baby.

Have a look at the KellyMom website (American but VERY useful)

My understanding is that you can, and the sooner you try the better. I haven't fully read this page but I used this site a lot when I was starting breastfeeding and it was very helpful.

It might not be easy but if you want to try maybe contact a lactation consultant who knows their stuff and can support you. Congratulations on your twins! You have nothing to feel guilty about, whatever you decide. Good luck!

You can restart lactaction - call the La Leche League
