Dry peeling skin on bum, using real nappies - help?

My 8mo LO is in real nappies and twice has had dry peeling skin on her bottom. The first time it happened I did an internet search and read somewhere that it can be caused by an allergic reaction to washing powder and to use non-bio. Shes in nursery and they wash her nappies there for us so I presumed that was the problem. However I checked and they use non-bio but by the time I found this out the rash had gone so I let it go.

A month or so later its come back today. I can't think of anything we've done differently although she is teething loads right now and has recently been poorly with a stomach bug.

Anyone got any ideas?

Do you use any nappy creams?

My ds gets very dry peeling skin if I use metanium.

I dont normally use nappy cream, she rarely gets a rash. If she does get one I pop some sudocrem or calendula cream on. But thats for more of a red rash, this one is dry cracked shiny skin, not red.

I'm curious too as my DD has been having a sore bum period from teething and resultant toxic poo, followed by rough dry skin. I only ever wash nappies in soapnuts and use calendula cream on her bottom, but she also has dry skin on her vulva and I've never used cream there. The last time she had it it disappeared after a week but this time it's lasted much longer and doesn't seem to get any better.

Sorry to hijack Cazwa! I was going to post the exact same thing then saw yours.

Hmmm. Don't know what it could be. Bumping for more advice....

Teething creates really really acidic wee and poo - it is most likely a mixture of the two making her sore, and then the peeling is as it heals

Cream will soothe it, as will wiping with chamomile tea (and soaking your nappy liners in it and putting it on damp)

No problem Brangelina, I forgot to add its also on her front bottom (OMG at my poor, poor, biology - is this the same as vulva?!?)

It took a week to clear up last time too. Maybe its a toxic teething poo thing, she did do 3 poos yesterday that were all not right.

I sympathise, my ds used to get a rash when he was teething. We stopped using soap powder and switched to an eco-ball at 60 degrees with a vinegar rinse. I don't have one, but I have heard that microwaving a nappy for a second or something is a great way of killing bacteria during periods of nappy rash - but that could go badly wrong.
Fresh air is great, so lots of nappy free time should help - not sure what her nursery will think though. I used to think Ds's bum looked worse (scabbier) after nappy-free time, but it was just getting better.
We used to use lots of water to rinse between nappies, just stood him in the sink, and a tiny bit of soap and lots of rinsing after a poo.
We changed him every two hours and stopped using polyester fleece because it made him redder.
The Chamomile tea solution recommended is nice, we used to apply some cold tea with cotton wool, I didn't notice a bit change, but I think it did help soothe the problem.
I did find that metanium, applied thinly healed up any major problems, and whilst he had a red bum I would use bepanthan, to keep the urine away from his sensitive skin, which seemed to keep it from getting redder.
I hope it is all cleared up soon, poor old DD, it's horrible when they have sore bums.
