think this is really common lindalou, I have the same thing with DS (3 in Oct). I think he's a bit weirded out by the sensation IFYKWIM (sorry!). How old is your DS? What happens if he has no nappy on?

Lindalou · 14/07/2004 14:05

He is 3 and a half,if he has no nappy on he just waits until bedtime. He is such a deep sleeper that he still has to have nappies on at bedtime.

this may sound gross but have you thought of letting him watch the poo come out and drop down in to the pan?

What I mean is sit him on the loo and look between his legs and view the whole process. It fascinates my ds1, 3yrs, and it was this involvement that got him to ask to poo on the loo rather than the potty.

Of course I may be creating a scattalogical fetishist a few years down the track but as long as I don't have to scrape s&&t out of the potty any more I don't really care

Yes weve done that, I think that is actually where his fear comes from unfortunatly. We had the same problem with my eldest daughter but it only lasted a week

Oh.

well what about the much messier route of letting him fill his pants, sensing how uncomfortable and unpleasant it is. Hopefully he will use the alternative, the loo, next time.

Vile aftermath for you, I know, but it may be the trigger he needs.

Don't push it (if you'll pardon the pun). My nephew has refused to poo anywhere but his nappy for the last 1.5 years - he's now 4. If the nappy is withheld, he simply doesnt' poo at all, for days on end. My brother (his dad), thinks it's because he doesn't like the sensation.

Fortunately he doesn't poo that much, so this isn't a real issue (apart from being frustrating for everyone). The hope is that peer pressure once he starts school will do the trick.

Oh I am glad I am not the only one! My DS is 2 and 5 mths and I only started training a few weeks ago so can't grumble really but the not pooing on the potty/toilet issue is making me keep him in pull ups. This is not a problem at home as he keeps the same pair dry all day. However at nursery I think they subconsciously think of him as still in nappies, no matter how many times I say they still seem to get through several pairs pull ups a day. This is then causing DS to regress and do more wees in pull up.
Should I just bite the bullet and put him in big boy pants and deal with the horrible mess when he poos? (and make nursery deal with it!) Do you think the absence of pull up might make him reconsider where he poo's anyway? I am a bit torn and don't want to push him if he isn't ready.

this happened with my ds1 too. he would pooh in his pants but not the toilet when first toilet trained. lasted about 2-3 weeks (although it seemed longer at the time !!)
ds2 took to it straight away, but that's just because he wanted to be like his big bro. most things are much easier second time around.
good luck, i'm sure it will happen.
