Baby daughter needs glasses - advise please!

Hi all

My daughter is 11 months old. After we noticed one of her eyes slightly turning inwards at times, she was referred by the health visitor for an eye test. At her appointment today the optician used a machine that scans babies eyes and can tell if they're short/long sighted. It turns out that my daughter is mildly long sighted in one eye, but very long sighted in the other. We're now waiting for a hospital apt in 3/4 weeks, and I was told she would need glasses to stop her eye turning inwards.

Both my husband and I had lazy eyes when we were children (I wore the patches etc.) so it's no surprise our daughter has too. It's amazing that these things can be detected so early these days. I'm very glad she won't end up like me, most of my vision is over one side.

If your baby/toddler wears glasses, please could you give me some advice? Which glasses to choose, how to keep them on etc. Any advice gratefully appreciated.

Thanks!

You can buy more flexible plastic frames with a band round the back that holds them in place. Options for kids glasses are so much better now than when I was young.

Dd2 started wearing glasses at 2 years old, very long sighted and a squint suddenly appeared.

Avoid metal frames. My dd2 had metal frames which looked cuter but she tear them off her face in such a way that has left scars on her face.

She was also a nightmare wearing them . I tried playing games with her teddies wearing her glasses, it didn't work.

Every time we went out I made her wear glasses it was part of the routine, coat, shoes, glasses. Eventually the penny dropped she saw better with them and accepted them.

She needed patching. Sadly her type of squint was not suitable for surgery because glasses completely correct the squint. I had the surgery late at 7 years old. My eyes are really straight but my eyes do not focus together so I have virtually no 3D vision. I am told she could wear contact lenses but she has SN and she doesn't think she could manage.

Good luck OP

Like these www.visionexpress.com/glasses/gv-baby/10015075/?page=1/12/now-price/asc

Bear in mind some of the cost of frames and lenses will be covered by the NHS glasses voucher that everyone under 16 is entitled to

Look for a brand called tomato. I know several babies who wear these

Thanks all for your advice! Smile

I am similar to you Fortifiedwithtea, no 3D vision and my eyes don't focus together, but I didn't have the surgery.

My DD started wearing glasses at 14 months old so very little as well. She is long sighted in both eyes and the glasses correct it perfectly.

She took to wearing her glasses straight away, no issues at all. Clearly she knew straight away she could see better with then on.

I recommend Specsavers because unlike some opticians they have an onsite area where they can repair glasses. This is handy especially for you young children as they get thrown about so much. I've lost count of the number of times I've been in to have her glasses straightened out. With some other opticians they have to send the glasses away which means being without glasses for potentially 1-2 weeks, not ideal. Also you get 2 for the price of 1, so I use get sunglasses for her as well.

My daughter has some super lovely blue rimmed metal frame glasses, they are round and look great. She always gets compliments of her glasses 😊 They have rubber bits on the side so they never hurt or aggrevate her.

Good luck with everything, I'm sure you will be fine x
