what do they typically have for tea?

do you just give a sandwich (since they have already eaten a cooked lunch at school)? or do they have a second hot meal?

Depends. Wednesday is roast dinner day and I know they like that and eat most of it so they have 'picky tea'.

Other days I know they'll only have a jacket potato and don't eat all of it so they get a proper dinner.

Bananamama1213 · 13/09/2017 17:17

Always a proper meal and I never know how much they actually eat.. DS is in year 1 now.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 13/09/2017 17:19

They are both ravenous at pickup time so we have a normal hot meal. I know they eat all their school meals, too - they are not hungry when I send them in with a lunchbox.

I'm having the same issue. My DD doesn't like jacket potato but seems to be picking it every day and then just eating the fillings. Might try asking if someone can help her with choosing as today was roast day and I knew she would have loved it (just started reception)

Yesterday she told me she just ate tuna and no potato! So I did macaroni cheese for her tea

Vinorosso74 · 13/09/2017 17:22

Proper dinner though that can vary from scrambled egg and beans on toast/fish fingers to something more healthy like fish, rice and veg.
Some days she won't eat all her lunch and if she does I don't think the portions are very big.

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 13/09/2017 17:22

Proper dinner. Portions are small.
I never get th r they don't need two hot meal thing, we often eat hot things for more than meal Hmmp

Eolian · 13/09/2017 17:23

Always a proper cooked meal. Apart from anything else, dh and I would be eating a proper meal anyway, so there's no sense in making sandwiches as well. If ds wasn't that hungry he could just have a smaller portion - a light meal doesn't have to be a cold meal or sandwiches.

superking · 13/09/2017 17:23

Mine has just started and is having a hot school dinner so I am doing a simple sandwich/ egg on toast kind of thing for tea. He seems happy with it. Have swapped his younger brother round too.

Dementedswan · 13/09/2017 17:24

Today was roast dinner day too. But mine are always starving so I do a cooked meal too.

ElizabethShaw · 13/09/2017 17:25

Normal dinner at home - spag bol, curry, roast etc.
School dinners are small and lots gets left anyway!

ProfessorCat · 13/09/2017 17:27

It depends. Some days a sandwich and snacks like fruit, crisps, cold meat, flapjacks etc to go with it. Other days a cooked meal with us. Sometimes something light like scrambled eggs on toast or a fish finger sandwich.

GreenGoblin0 · 13/09/2017 21:28

if I attempted to give my DD a sandwich for her tea I would never hear the end of it "that's not a proper dinner mummy" she is actually hungrier on days she has had school dinners probably because she doesn't eat much of them because they don't taste that nice!

Allyg1185 · 13/09/2017 21:36

Always a cooked meal because I dont know how much he has actually eaten

ILoveDolly · 13/09/2017 21:37

Depends on how pressed for time we are. They'd happily eat sandwiches every night but I like to do a hot meal at least three times a week.

megletthesecond · 13/09/2017 21:42

Monday - french stick based tea with fillings, salad, nuts and various picky bits. With soup on cold days.
Tues - chips and nuggets after swimming.
Weds - sandwich based tea.
Thurs - left overs tea, whatever's in the fridge.
Friday - usually pasta based.

MmmmmmmChips · 13/09/2017 21:43

I don't understand why you can't have two hot meals a day?
DC always has hot meals generally made from scratch.

AmyGardner · 13/09/2017 21:44

Always a proper meal. It could be six hours after lunch!

purplecollar · 13/09/2017 21:45

Just normal hot meal I'd make for dh and I. The only think I'm mindful of is that Wednesday is roast day at school, so I'd probably not duplicate that. Or Friday is fish day so I'd not make fish for tea.

The portions are tiny at our school.

QuackDuckQuack · 13/09/2017 21:46

Normal dinner. Portions are small and the portion of protein can be really small because it's the expensive bit of the meal.

MrsJamin · 13/09/2017 21:47

I'd give things like beans on toast, boiled egg and soldiers, cheese toasty, sandwiches. I used to offer a hot tea but they didn't want it.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 13/09/2017 21:47

Is Wednesday roast dinner in every school in Britain? It has been in every school I've taught at or that my kids have been to!

ShowOfHands · 13/09/2017 21:48

picky bits

You type "picky bits", I hear scabs

Sorry Grin

DS is always utterly starving after school dinners so needs a proper meal in the evening.

trilbydoll · 13/09/2017 21:49

I can't be sure if DD is going to clear her plate or exist on 3 small spoonfuls of rice so I'm intending on having a proper hot meal ready (probably our leftovers from the night before) and if she doesn't want it, no worries.

opheliacat · 13/09/2017 21:49

Is there something wrong in having two hot meals a day ?

isittheholidaysyet · 13/09/2017 21:50

Proper meal. They are starving, but also other family members haven't had a meal, so I'm cooking for everyone anyway.

(They also tend to eat an after-school-snack the size of my lunch, and eat a bowl of cereal or some toast, half an hour after dinner!)
