I've been invited to a 1st birthday party and they want us to buy the baby a gift, to put in a time capsule to open when he turns 18. Yeah I know..Wtf help me. He's not even 1 until end of October but invites have already been sent?!

Friends did this recently. I wrote a letter about the first day I met the baby. Others brought things newspaper, a coin, I think a recipe, sports results. I thought it was lovely.

Lyrics of the number one song typed up on pretty paper,
A couple of pages out of catalogue to show the price of things,
Photo of you with the parents of the baby ?

I don't know them that well, I don't know if just to get the parents a gift card

Sounds like a nice easy way to do something cheap! Just buy anything with 2017 written on it! But seriously, if the parents have asked everyone to do this, they've obviously put some thought into it, so I would be inclined to join in. Sounds like a great idea to save on filling the house up with too many toys, and I'd love to be around to see someone open a present like that!

Are they fun parents? Could you do a card of predictions for the future? Things like finally getting hover cars?

Or a list of your favourite sayings ?

My daughter's birthday is the beginning of October, clearly I'm not as organised as I thought I was!
I think the letter is a lovely idea. He could end up with loads of papers as probably everyone will think of that.

Sukitakeitoff · 11/09/2017 06:09

I think it's a lovely idea! Maybe a local magazine plus a copy of the latest Now CD - just hope it's still possible to play them on something in 17 years' time!

One of those Beatrix Potter coloured coins. It's child appropriate and you never know, it may become valuable in 18 years.

A photo frame with a family pic inside ? I think this is a cracker my idea (may steal!) and you should def join in

Ignoring the time capsule aspect for a moment - would you have expected them to invite you to their baby's first party (would you/did you invite them in similar circumstances?

I would use that as a guide to dictate quite how much effort and money to spend on this...

How are you linked to the parents? Could that provide a clue as to what to get?

Failing that, a cd with 2016 number 1 hits or a Now cd, a printout of the home pages from a number of big websites, from BBC news to Amazon, Facebook, eBay, family sports team, plus add some funny or random ones in too...

Then there are things like a jar of air from 2017, find out if there are any seeds that can be dormant that long, a set of shiny (or not!) coins, an old £5 note,

bunningsbunny · 11/09/2017 07:34

gift I think those Beatrix potter coloured coins are already getting valuable - most of the coloured ones have been sold and the normal ones in presentation folders are £10 where still available from the mint.

Lemondrop99 · 11/09/2017 15:06

We've bought our baby the last old style 2016 £1 coin and the new style 2017 £1 from the Royal Mint. Not that expensive (you could just get the old one?) and nicely packaged as a keep sake.
