how old was your child when you first took it to the cinema?

I saw an advert today for Shrek 3 that's coming out in summer. My little girls loves Shrek 1 and 2 on DVD and am wondering whether she'd like to go to pictures but not sure if the dark would freak her out - how do you find out these things?

She'll be 3.6 in summer - is that old enough or not to sit through a film - what do you all think?

I took DS2 (age 6, various SN) to the cinema to see Happy Feet. I won't be taking it again any time soon!

We took dd1 to see her first movie at the cinema when she was about 2 and a half it was Toy Story 2. We weren't sure if she would sit through it or not but she did she loved it. The dark didn't bother her she was more upset by the trailer for a dinosaur movie that was on before the film. Once the movie started she was fine.

Dd2 is nearly 3 and we haven't taken her to the cinema yet, as we're convinced that she won't sit through a film. I'd like to take her to see Shrek 3 when it comes out as she likes the first two but I'll have to wait and see nearer the time.

3.6 is fine - unless there are any particular considerations.
DS has been going since before he was 3, I think.

I would give it a go. Sit near the back and you can slip out if she's not happy.

DD went with nursery at 4. She was a bit surprised that they turned all of the lights out!

I took my dd when she was about 10 mths. I took her a few times to 'Baby Makes Two' at our local cinema. She liked looking at the projector man and would look at the screen a little before falling asleep. I don't think I could take her now that she is 14 mths - too wriggly.

dd1 was 3, dd2 was 1yr old, dd3 has been going since she was tiny.

Obviously he slept through.

I think a 3.6 year old would absolutely love to go to the cinema for the first time to see Shrek 3. You'll be there with her making her feel safe.

I took DS age 3.6 to see Wallace & Gromit. Was amazed by her (suddenly much longer than usual)attention span in the cinema, seemed completely magicked away by the whole experience. Therefore I really enjoyed it too, & it felt very special & formative.

Although the packet of jellybeans might have had something to do with it...

DS1 was just 3 when we first took him. He sat very neicely, but asked to go home half way through. I've never taken DS2, but DH took him at 3 1/2and he climbed all over the seats. DS1 (8) is still a bit nervous of actually going into the cinema, as it's dark, loud etc.

The first time you go, take her on her own,so you can leave if you have to.

have taken ds to cinema when he was about 6m (to parent and baby screening) but he is still too young for a proper cinema outing at 32m - he can sit through a film but is too disruptive and i wouldn't inflict him on a cinema audience yet. My mum took me to see watership down when i was about 4 or 5 and had too remove me because of my hysterical crying during the (many) scary/ sad scenes - so if you take your dd make sure the film content is appropriate - shrek should be tbh watership down is scary for me now let alone when i was 5!!!

dd1 was 3 and she will happily sit thru a good cartoon now.

dd2 was 6mths and was fine, but at 9mths she wouldn't sit still long enough, bah! no more movies for her until she's 3 then!

If you think she'll enjoy the film, then go for it.

Dd (just 7 now) first went to the cinema to see Chicken Little, last year.

Would have taken her before but she doesn't like anything scary/ embarrassing/ when anyone is a bit naughty etc. etc.

In fact it's only in the last couple of months that she's been able to watch Ice Age/Toy Story/ Monsters Inc.

She likes Shrek 1, but is only just able to watch Shrek 2. (Puss in Boots's eyes when he's doing the "Big Eyes, Love Me" thingy set her off crying

Ds1 was about 5.4 and ds2 was 3.8. They went to see Cars and Over the Hedge. They loved it!

dd1 was 4 I think but we took dd2 with us to dd1 cinema party last and she is just turning 2 next week. she loved the first half of the film, sat and watched it intently...then fell asleep lol

ds, before he was 3. i didn't think he'd sit through it but he did and has loved going ever since.

he sleeps with a light on so had expected the dark to freak him out too and it didn't!

We're taking ds1 (4) to the cinema for the first time next week. i think he'll really enjoy it. Ds2 (nearly 3) will be at nursery. he's too young. he can't even sit through a 10 minute show on Cbeebies.

I don't know if they are all the same, but we find the local Vue cinema keeps the lights on low for the kiddie films.

DS1 has been going since he was nearly 3, never a problem.

Took all three when ds was just 2, dd2 was 3 and dd1 was 5. They all loved it, just explain about the lights.
