What is sleeping through....?

What do people class as sleeping through? My little one is 10 weeks and has been sleeping for 5-6 hours at night for quite some time, she'll usually go from 10pm - 4am and then have a quick feed and go back til 7am (she then has another feed and play but after half hour or so she goes back off til about 9am) Is she sleeping through or because she wakes up at 4am she isn't?!

I believe the GP and HV consider 5-6h sleeping through. Can you do a night feed at midnight, so be sleeps until ,6am and with some luck you get some extra hours if he snoozes? I didn't consider my DC as "sleeping through" until they actually let me sleep 7-8h. DD slept until 7am at 14 months after having to swap at night her milk bottle for water. Upset for 3-4 days but then slept through. DS slept through at 9 months. Both woke up earlier during growth spurts, specially when learning to walk. We never took them out of the cot until 7 am. They eventually got their click adjusted to that and none wakes up before that time.

Personally I consider it to be allowing me to sleep for as long as I need to i.e. 8 hours, but I understand the conventional definition is skipping a feed, so about 4-5 hours.

Why it matter if it's classed as sleeping through or not? I wouldn't class it as sleeping through but why do you care what others call it?

7pm to 7am. My MIL would say that my dh 'slept though' really early and made me feel inadequate...until I found out she meant 12 to 6am!! Er, no love.

I consider sleeping through to be from when DD goes to bed at 8pm to any time after 6am the next day. You'll find people who consider sleeping through to be from 12 til 6 though so it just depends on your definition. I consider a night with only one wake up to be a big success.

Thanks guys, I'd also class it as sleeping for 7/8 hours. I was just curious that's all x

For me, sleeping through meant I didn't have to wake up during the night after I went to bed at my usual bedtime (10-11pm ish) until when I would usually get up in the morning (6am or after). I think my daughter did it a few times around 9-10 weeks, again twice at 13 months, and then not again until she was 3.5.

True sleeping through Is like 7-7 in my opinion. Basically when you don't have to intervene until the next morning after their bedtime. That's why people are often bending the truth a bit when they claim their 4 week old baby is "sleeping through"

It doesn't matter though does it? As long as you can get enough sleep to function.
