Baby screaming - teething?

Hi

My little boy has always had bad wind (currently 14 weeks old), he's very difficult to get a burp out of so a lot of the bubbles make their way out the other end - he farts a lot! Often it doesn't bother him but when he's feeding it's at it's worst and he often ends up screaming. (We give him gripe water regularly to try to help). Usually with a little soothing or his favourite song he will go back on (he is EBF) and continue his feed (even if he comes on and off a few more times before he's done)
This last week he has been teething and that's been bothering him but I've been managing it with calpol, some gel and a teething mitt and lots of cuddles, however his eating has changed. He asks to feed (and is usually due a feed when he does) but when I go to latch him he screams the house down. Like absolutely shrieks like I've never heard before. If I play his favourite song he will sometimes begin feeding but the last two days it's been so bad he just works himself up into a frenzy and I have to soothe him to sleep and try again when he wakes. At which point sometimes I have been able to feed him and others the cycle starts again!

Have any of you experienced this? Is this change in his feeding / increase in screaming related to teething or would you say he is getting colicky?

I'm finding it really tough because I worry he won't get enough to eat and also I'm super tired because of his teeth I think I was up 5 times in 6 and a half hours feeding and soothing him last night Confused zzzzzzzz....

(Oh that's another thing, it never ever happens over night. It's only in the day!)

If his soothed to sleep without being fed his not hungry ...
Sounds like his crying because his tired the shrieking is him saying " I am so tired. Help me go to sleep right now "

Thanks loopthehoop.

I do think you're right and sometimes he's not hungry but some days he has done this almost all day, with only one feed without screaming. Surely he can't only need one feed all day he must be hungry more often?
Plus if he does calm down for me without going to sleep for a little bit (when I say I soothe him to sleep he usually will only sleep about 10 minutes or so - unless he's due a nap - just enough to calm down) he will often feed and do a full feed so he must want to eat.

Also he goes for a nap every 1 hour 45 to 2 hours so I am not convinced he is always overtired. Although I'm sure again that sometimes this might be the case, but he gets a lot of sleep in.

It sounds like it could be silent reflux which is stomach acid coming up his throat and causing pain. My youngest had this (as well as a dairy allergy) and she used to scream the place down all day and used to fight me when I tried to feed her. Google the symptoms to see if they fit and if it sounds familiar I'd make an appt with the GP to see if they will give him infant gaviscon (next to useless but always the first port of call) or ranitidine. My dd needed omeprazole but I think that needs to be prescribed by a paediatrician initially.

I hope you find out what is causing the crying soon, it's so worrying when you don't know what is wrong.

Thanks Kim, I'll take a look on google now!

It is horrible seeing them so upset and in pain isn't it! ☹️

Maybe get in at the doctors or ring your health visitor and see what advice they can give.
My son was bad with colic from the start we gave him infacol, gripe water made my son's colic worse.
Then my daughter had gastric reflux about a month after she was born, she wasn't able to keep anything down though and was bringing the whole bottle up and it was like cottage cheese and she was sleeping alot but didn't cry with it.
Always best to speak to the doctor or health visitor.
Hope you find out what it is, it's horrible when your child is suffering and is so young as there is no way they can tell you what is wrong.

Thanks Butterfly, I will call the doctor in the morning. I have spoken before about it to them and they just said he sounded colicky and it would pass but it's definitely got far worse the last few days!

That sounds horrible what your poor daughter had, must have been so difficult for you!

It's interesting you say that about the gripe water, we were only using GW and nothing else as we started him on infacol when his wind began and it constipated him. I decided today to give him no gripe water and see if it made a difference and he has actually been far better, so it's almost as though the gripe water has not just stopped being effective but like with you it's actually began making him worse!

Thank you! It is so horrible isn't it! Poor babies
