I'd speak to your HV as that is unusual
As far as I'm aware

What?!

Your partner put a thermometer up your baby's bum?

I don't understand.

Sorry are you saying your partner put a thermometer in your newborn's anus? Shock

Surely I've misunderstood? Nobody could be so stupid.

Reported. Creepy fuckers.

NomDePlumeReloaded · 06/09/2017 21:59

?

Do you mean that your partner put the thermometer in your baby's rectum and it made them poo?

If yes, it's great that your baby has some relief but please don't poke things in their bottom in future. There are a lot of sensitive membranes and you/he could do more harm than good.

Seek the advice of your health visitor, GP, practice nurse or midwife if you are concerned about how to recognise/manage/prevent constipation in future.

NomDePlumeReloaded · 06/09/2017 22:03

Some people are that misguided. Even if this is an iffy thread.

MytToeHurtsBetty · 06/09/2017 22:04

I'm sure she means a rectal thermometer. And yes I think that rectal stimulation IS recommended for constipation in very young babies! I'm glad it worked op

crazyhairdontcare · 06/09/2017 22:05

WOAH! Don't go shoving things up there, seriously! Without pointing out all the (obvious?) dangers, you do not want your baby becoming reliant on having things poked in there to make her poop. Two days is not a concern. Please speak to your Health visitor next time if you are worried.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 06/09/2017 22:07

It's not recommended that parents have a go though is it?!

Some parents are misguided... and some are stupid and above things up their child's bum rather than seek medical advice.

MsPassepartout · 06/09/2017 22:08

I don't think your "solution" sounds like a good idea. I'd be concerned that this might harm your baby.

If you're concerned about your baby not having poos, or have other health concerns, then it's a good idea to ask your health visitor for advice. They're able to advise on appropriate actions if you're worried about constipation or anything else, able to check whether baby is okay if you see them in person, and able to advise whether baby needs medical attention from doctors etc. They usually put their phone number in the baby's red book (baby's health record).

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 06/09/2017 22:09

At 5 days the baby is probably still under the midwifery team.

MsPassepartout · 06/09/2017 22:12

And yes I think that rectal stimulation IS recommended for constipation in very young babies!

Surely that's something that should be done by a trained medical professional though? After said trained medical professional has assessed the baby to see whether the constipation is severe enough to need that kind of help?

PianoThirty · 06/09/2017 22:14

For future reference, try giving the baby a nice warm bath. That lets them relax their muscles, and the poo will flow. (Your bath will get messy, sorry!)

MrsMontgomerySmythe · 06/09/2017 22:14

I live abroad where all meds for the under 2s are given by suppositories.

Also parents use rectal thermomenters. It is a cultural difference with the UK but that does not make it wrong or creepy.

In fact the pediatricians here (everyone sees one for their under 5s as GPs are not specialised or ised to seeing young children) recommend for compensation a little soap on the end of the rectal thermometer and to then take the baby's temp.

The end of the thermometer only goes in less than 1/2 a cm. And it works!

This is medical advice in many European countries and really not creepy.

MrsMontgomerySmythe · 06/09/2017 22:15

Constipation not compensation Smile

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 06/09/2017 22:16

Hi there OP,
Congratulations on the new baby, while we know that the mothers of MN are extremely wise indeed, we would recommend in future that you check with your midwife or health visitor before taking any such action.

newbornmaja · 06/09/2017 22:16

yes rectal bum just a delicate sensitive touch please do not think im a dumbhead!!
we had midwife saying its ok for 5 days...nooo..its not cos my baby had bit of a hard stomach...so while i was changing a nappy from the wee i just literrally tried to check babys temperature within all safety margins and its worked with massive poo and im so happy about it.

SerfTerf · 06/09/2017 22:18

Posting on MN certainly seemed to spur your DP into rapid action.

Solved in just two minutes after a four day issue! Smile

SerfTerf · 06/09/2017 22:18

No sorry. 24 hrs and 2 mins exactly

Is this poo o'clock maybe?

Footle · 07/09/2017 07:06

As PP says, babies and children in mainland Europe get most of their medication by suppository. No spitting out Calpol! And temperatures always taken rectally.

CoteDAzur · 07/09/2017 09:54

Baby's temperature is always taken rectally in France. We are told that is the only reliable method.
