What's your 6-year old ds into?

fearful that I'm "babying"him too much (and asking for him to get his head kicked in in the playground?!). He's still into his cuddly toys, Paddington, "nice" stories, Cbeebies etc. However, some of the boys at school are getting into power rangers etc(and the horrible magazines that go with them) and I'm worried he's going to feel left out. Just wondered what consensus is on this, what yours is like, am I being fair to the little man etc.
Thanks!

DS age 6 is is into stuff like beano, dandy and oor willie, keeps trying to play the miniclip games on computer, football and fighting and riding his bike - but - he is the youngest with older brothers

RanToTheHills · 03/04/2007 11:59

ah so not power-rangers either then? Mine is the oldest andfairly young for his yr so rather immature, probably, prefer him thatway though!

Power rangers and lego- preferably lego starwars. He's not averse to cbeebies stuff still though. It's a tricky age, quite transitional. I've found the boys at school who have older brothers and sisters are more "mature", and the boys who are the eldest seem more innocent and still into the more babyish stuff.

The Power rangers thing was definately influenced by boys at school, although the lego starwars thing is all his own doing. He still prances around to Hi-five and the wiggles though!

computer
spiderman
scoby doo
looney tunes
bikes and scooters

trashing his bedroom
winging and whining
answering back
asking for sweets too often

eldest DS was more cuddly toys and gentle stories so it probably depends on birth order

that's reassuring. Really would like to steer clear of power rangers & computer games for as long as possible!

yeah, it's quick enough for him not to lose interest, he can produce almost instant results and likes the spatial aspect

we got started on this website

mine will be 6 this year and loves the wonderpets (and is still terrified by numberjacks) but his real love is football and cricket and play fighting with his mates. They don't do power rangers or stuff like that but they do a lot of wrestling and kicking or throwing a ball about! He also loves cuddles with his mum .

Don't worry about him feeling left out. He certainly won't be the only one in the playground who doesn't know/isn't into the whole power rangers thing.

Clary · 03/04/2007 12:35

DS1 is 7 actually. Almost 8. For his 6th b/day we got him Star Wars on DVD so he could "play Star Wars" with his pals, but he's not actually that bothered about it.

Still even now likes dinosaurs, some cuddlies, mroe or less any story I'm reading his siblings (who are 5 and 3). They were all well into Narnia when the film was out and he likes Dr Who (tho not as much as DS2 hoho - see other thread). Bike riding, Top Trumps, Magnetix, all popular for the last couple of years.

But asked to do a drawing (for school) he drew a lion. Otherwise it might have been a dinosaur, a monster, a knight, a roman soldier. He has friends who are into Pokemon and Power Rangers, but he isn't, and I don;t think he suffers. He loves the football cards atm. What I'm trying to say is that it goes in phases. As celery and others say, it depends where he is in the family. DS1 is my oldest.

DS is 6 and into power rangers, is a PFB and has been for a couple of years - but influenced by friends, I think. His current overwhelming passion is football, he loves to play, watch (either there or on TV) and has a match of the day annual he spends hours studying. His other big interests have been knights/castles and lego. I would rate power rangers as a third level.

Anchovy · 03/04/2007 12:51

How funny - I was thinking along exactly the same lines this morning.

DS is 5.6. He is very affectionate, nice natured and not an "alpha male" type at all. Also has no truck with "stories" much to my regret (I have a literature degree and was looking forward to my dcs sitting rapt at my feet while I read them High Literature).

He came back from the library yesterday with books on volcanoes; weather; dinosaurs and Thunderbirds. He likes climbing, his scooter, cooking, lego and playmobil. When his friends come round they either play in the garden on the climbing frame or with the lego.

He is growing outof the younger bits of CBeebies - loves Blue Planet and any sort of Discovery Channel programmes. He and DH watched one about building mega - bridges last night: the one last week about giant squid also a huge hit!

Power Rangers completely banned at his school, and he has little interest on watching on tv. Old dvds of the original Thunderbirds are much better!

foxinsocks · 03/04/2007 12:53

lol anchovy - those are exactly the sort of books ds chooses from the library. No sign at all of story books (like his sister chooses) - he's found a book that is basically a catalogue of old football cards and he takes it out every time!
